Guadeloupe is a group of nine inhabited islands in the southern Caribbean Sea and an overseas department of the country France. As with the other overseas departments Guadeloupe is part of the European Union.

It belongs to a group of islands known as the Leeward Islands which are part of the Lesser Antilles island chain.

The Guadeloupe Archipelago includes the large islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, the nearby islands of Marie-Galante, La Désirade, Îles des Saintes and numerous smaller islands.

The Amerindian inhabitants called Guadeloupe “Karukera” which means “Island of Beautiful Waters”.
