Ameland beach is a popular spot for sport fishing, seal watching or relaxing on the beach... bird watching is also popular with visitors as the area is home to more than 60 different species of birds... Ameland is both a municipality and a West Frisian Island located in on the northern coast of the Netherlands. It is the third major island of the West Frisians.
The Ameland Lighthouse was built in 1880 by order of William III of the Netherlands. After World War II a new, weaker lamp was installed, which was replaced by a stronger lamp in 1952. The lighthouse is 55 metres (180 ft) tall and has 15 floors.
