NETHERLANDS ~ Mill Network at Kinderdijk - UNESCO

... Wonderful view of a really typical Dutch landscape, windwills and canals... the group of 19 monumental windmills is very picturesque and draws a lot of tourists, so this place is very popular... it is the only place in the world that has so many mills so close together in an authentic polder (a low-lying tract of land enclosed by dikes) landscape... the mills, pumping stations, low and high "boezems" (storage basins) ditches and sluices together form an ingenious water management system... this Dutch village is still inhabited at the moment... people live within the windmills, preserving this unique region of the Netherlands as it once was hundreds of years ago... in one of the mills is a small museum established with an exhibition about how miller-families lived... you can also walk of cycle along the canals and river to take a closer look at the mills and enjoy the landscape... or take a boat tour alongside the windmills... Thank you Karin!!❁◕ ‿ ◕❁
Kinderdijk is a small town near Rotterdam, situated in an area called the Alblasserwaard. This part of the Netherlands lies below sea-level, and has a history of floods.

The windmills at Kinderdijk are built between 1738 an 1740. Their purpose was to pump the excess water into a reservoir until the level of the river had reached a level that pumping the water into the river (called the Lek) was possible again. Since 1927 a diesel pumping station does the real job. The windmills were used for the last time during WWII, when the mechanical pumps could not be used any more due to fuel shortages.

The Kinderdijk Windmill complex was added to the UNESCO WHS list in 1997.
