Dakar is also known as “Paris of Africa”.... with some great beaches... home to the tallest statue in Africa. "The African Renaissance Monument", a very popular tourist attraction... built in December 2010 in honor of the end of slavery and the continent's emergence from oppressive colonial regimes... many cultural institutions are located in the capital... it's also tropical Africa’s leading industrial and service centre... Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. It is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula on the Atlantic coast, the westernmost city on the African mainland and a major port on Africa's western coast.
The city’s name comes from dakhar, a Wolof name for the tamarind tree and the name of a coastal Lebu village that was located south of what is now the first pier.
