Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine, near Germany's borders with Belgium and the Netherlands.

The name Cologne derives from the German name Köln, which in turn comes from the Latin word Colonia from the Roman name of the city (founded in 38 BC)—Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium.
