The city of Dordrecht, located in the province of South Holland was founded in the early 11th C. Located in a wetland area with such rivers as the Merwede, Noord and Ouwe Maas, it was an important merchant city with a lively trade in wood, cereals and wine.
Today, the city is the 6th largest seaport in the Netherlands, and is primarily known for shipbuilding and its wood and steel industry. Dordrecht has a 14th-century Gothic church and an art museum.
