Salt Spring Island is the largest of British Columbia's southern Gulf Islands. The island became known as Salt Spring Island because of the North End cold salt springs which still exist to this day. It's the most densely populated and most frequently visited of all the Southern Gulf Islands.
Ganges is the largest village on Salt Spring Island and located in about the middle of the island.
The Village of Ganges was named after HMS Ganges, a Royal Navy Battleship launched in 1821 which visited Salt Spring Island (Admiral Island at the time) between 1823 and 1861 conducting land surveys.
