Peschiera is a former garrison town situated on the South East corner of Lake Garda on the river Mincio in the province of Verona, in Veneto.
The Rocca is a fortress built by the Scaliger family on Roman foundation walls and subsequently enlarged by the Venetians in the 16th century, before being further expanded by Napoleon’s forces, was eventually used as a military base by the Austrians.
The Fortified city of Peschiera del Garda is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Venetian Defense Works between the 16th and 17th Century: State of the Earth - State of the Western Sea", an extraordinary collection of the most representative defensive systems made by the Republic of Venice, designed after the discovery of gunpowder.
These defense systems, which span more than 1,000 kilometers between Lombardy and the eastern Adriatic Coast, protected Venice from other European powers as well as sea routes and ports in the Adriatic Sea.
