Fantastic new place off my "missing" country list... Iraq, the land between the two rivers, has a rich inheritance of fascinating ancient archaeological sites... this is one of the largest and best-preserved ziggurats of Mesopotamia... most intriguing and famous monument... Thanks so much Hasanain!!【ツ】
The Ziggurat of Ur is a Neo-Sumerian ziggurat in what was the city of Ur near Nasiriyah, in present-day Dhi Qar Province.
The ziggurat was part of a temple complex that served as an administrative center for the city, and it was also thought to be the place on earth where the moon god Nanna, the patron deity of Ur, had chosen to dwell. First built during the 21st century BCE, the rather unstable first version collapsed some 15 centuries later. The present-day site dates from the rule of King Nabonidus, and was found in an archaeological search in the beginning of the 20th C.
Iraq is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria. The capital, and largest city, is Baghdad.
