...View of an impressive rock at this wonderful ancient site... Gal Potha which translates to ‘stone book’ which literally is a stone book...you will not find anything like this in a library!(◕‿-) Thanks a lot Ravindra!!
From backside card:
Gal Potha was built by King Nissanka Malla (1187-1196) to record his achievements. It is believed to be the heaviest book in the world and contains over 4300 characters in 72 lines. This massive slab is approximately 8,2m x 1,4 meters.
Beautiful carvings of two rows of geese (Hamsa) form the border of the side of the rock. Between this design at the center is a carved seated figure of Goddess Lakshmi holding two flowers and two elephants poring water on her from a container. The inscription has been of great assistance to the scholars since it also reveals the evolution of the Sinhala script.
