Named for the pioneer John Walter and his family, the picturesque settlement grew around its waterpower, which continues to provide energy for a gristmill. The location is now home to the spectacular accommodation The Falls Inn.
The Bruce Trail (Canada's oldest and longest footpath) crosses over these falls. The trail follows the Niagara Escarpment, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, from Niagara Falls to Tobermory on the top of the Bruce Peninsula.
