HUNGARY ~ Our Lady Chapel - Pannonhalma Abbey - UNESCO ~

... Nice chapel view, part of a huge abbey that stands proudly on a hill above the village...  it's an example of an early Christian monastery that still is in use by Benedictine monks... one of the oldest and largest impressive historical complexes in Hungary... this place also holds educational buildings, a forest and botanical and herbal gardens... and also operates as a college especially for boys... it is one of the best educational institutions in the country...  this Millenary Benedictine Abbey and its surroundings are full of beautiful sights... Thanks a lot Bori!(✿◠‿◠)

This Benedictine abbey was founded in 996 by Grand Prince Géza, father of Hungary’s first king, Stephen I. The monks here founded the country’s first school and, in 1055, wrote the first document in Hungarian.

The Chapel of our Lady, the building of which began in 1714, is situated at the top of the southern hill. It is single-aisled, 26 m by 10.9 m, rising to 5.58 m in the sanctuary. The nave is barrel-vaulted, and is joined to the sanctuary by a large triumphal arch. Its original Baroque interior was restored in Romantic style in 1865.

The Archabbey of Pannonhalma was added to the list of UNESCO World Hertitage sites in 1996.

HUNGARY ~ Liberty Bridge - Budapest ~

... Amazing view of the iconic Liberty Bridge... one of the most beautiful places of the city with its ornate decorations and pedestrian-friendly location... this bridge is breathtaking at night where it lights up and dominates the sky line... the bridge has a distinct coating of green: its color being totally different to all of the other bridges of Budapest... this makes it impossible to confuse it with any other structure in the city.... for many people living in Budapest, their favorite bridge... people sit on this bridge in between the walkway and the road and play music, are on dates or just hang out which gives it a lovely atmosphere...Thanks a lot Gian Luca and Raffaella! (✿◠‿◠)

The Liberty Bridge is the shortest bridge in the centre of Budapest’s with its 333.6m over the Danube river. Initially it was built as part of the Millennium World Exhibition at the end of the 19thC, in 1896.

On the day of its opening, the final silver rivet was inserted personally by the Emperor Franz Joseph. Not surprisingly, the Emperor gave his name to the bridge: Franz Joseph Bridge. However, World War 2 changed everything. First, the war led to the partial destruction of the bridge, and secondly, following its reconstruction, the new regime governing the country, with no hint of irony, gave the bridge its new name.

Inaugurated in 1904, the Parliament of Budapest, or "the Országházis" is designed by the Hungarian architect Imre Steindl who ironically went blind before its completion, leaving him unable to appreciate his finished masterpiece.

Construction started in 1885 but nearly 20 years later his eyesight had significantly deteriorated and he passed away on October 8, 1902, just weeks before the building was fully completed. However, a further two years was spent finalizing its inner works and decoration.

Budapest, including the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and Andrássy Avenue became a UNESCO WHS site in 1987. The Budapest World Heritage Site consists of three parts:

1. Buda Castle Quarter This holds the city's medieval sites, with Buda Castle. Also there are the remains of the original Roman town Aquincum.
2. Banks of the Danube This includes the Parliament (1884-1904) and the suspension bridge (1849). 3. Andrássy Avenue The extension with Andrássy Avenue in the year 2000 included the Opera, Millennium Park and the Underground Railway.
