NEW ZEALAND ~ Campbell Island - Sub Antarctic - UNESCO

... Spectacular coastline vieuw of a remote, uninhabited subantarctic nature reserve of New Zealand... the island is known for its rugged terrain, steep cliffs, and unique flora and fauna... globally renowned for its unique "megaherbs"...large, flowering herbaceous plants that have evolved to thrive in harsh, windy conditions... they are endemic to New Zealand's subantarctic islands... these fields of flora often grow in association with the Southern Royal Albatross, which nest among the megaherbs and tussock grasslands... because it is a highly protected site you can only visit via organized expedition cruises... of the five islands, access for tourists is allowed at specific sites on Enderby Island, the main Auckland Island and Campbell Island... Thanks Jodine! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

© Henry Elsom

Campbell Island / Motu Ihupuku is the main island of the Campbell Island group, which is the most southerly of the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands in the remote Southern Ocean. Covering 112.68 km² and featuring volcanic, mountainous terrain rising to 569 m at Mount Honey.

The most prominent megaherbs are the Bulbinella rossii (Ross Lily). Known for its bright yellow flower spikes that can dominate the landscape. And the Anisotome latifolia (Campbell Island Carrot). A striking plant with large, vibrant pink flower bunches that contrast with the often gloomy subantarctic weather. (shown on the postcard)

Campbell Island became a nature reserve in 1954, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 as part of the designation of all of the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands.

NEW ZEALAND ~Marahau and Otuwhero Inlet - South Island~

... Pretty aerial view often described as the "gateway" to Abel Tasman National Park... Marahau is known as a charming, un-commercialized, and laidback rural village with traditional Kiwi baches an iconic, typically small and rustic New Zealand holiday home... Otuwhero Inlet is located at the entrance to Marahau... a peaceful, scenic area with tidal flats and mangrove areas... they are often highlighted for their stunning natural beauty, starting point for Abel Tasman Coastal Track hikes, water taxi departures, and sea kayaking tours... many visitors recommending it as a base for exploring the area... Thanks a lot Sophie! (✿◠‿◠)

Abel Tasman National Park is a national park at the north end of New Zealand's South Island. It covers 237.1 km2  of land between Golden Bay / Mohua and Tasman Bay / Te Tai-o-Aorere, making it the smallest of New Zealand's national parks.  In 1942, the area was protected by the Government and named the Abel Tasman National Park.

It is named after Abel Tasman a dutch navigator who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand and who anchored nearby in Golden Bay.

The park is part of the Te Wāhipounamu (South West New Zealand) area of protected wilderness along the west side of the island that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990.

...  A great sunrise view... the lakes are famous for their still, reflective water known for creating spectacular mirror-like reflections of the Earl Mountains... one of new zealand's most iconic natural attractions... a visit to the Mirror Lakes involves walking along a wooden boardwalk dotted with viewing platforms... the view from the wooden platforms is pretty awesome and you have the opportunity to spot native birds... the Mirror Lakes are safeguarded by international regulations and are part of the global network of Protected Sites...Thanks a lot Susan! NEW ZEALAND ~ Sandlfy Bay - Abel Tasman National Park - UNESCO ~

...Panoramic view of one of New Zealand's many stunning beaches... towering sand dunes descend onto a wide beach with surging waves... headlands and coastal rock formations shelter the area from the elements... the Falls river flows past... sandfly bay is a wonderful spot to explore... the bay is often thought by locals to have been named for a small biting insect known as the sandfly, but this is incorrect... it was  actually named for the sand which, given the windy nature of this coast, flies from the tall dunes surrounding the bay... Thanks a lot Aaron! (✿◠‿◠)

Sandfly Bay is a beach at the Pacific coast of Otago Peninsula on the South Island located in the Abel Tasman National Park.

Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand’s smallest National Park at only 237 km2 in size, but has among the most visitors. In 2008 an extra 7.9 km2, including the formerly private land known as Hadfields Clearing, were added to the park. In 1942, the area was protected by the Government and named the Abel Tasman National Park.

It is named after Abel Tasman a dutch navigator who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand and who anchored nearby in Golden Bay.

NEW ZEALAND ~ Cape Reinga Lighthouse ~

... Lovely view of Cape Reinga Lighthouse showing Signpost Northland... one of the most important landmarks of Te Paki that stands on the edge of a steep rocky cape where the Pacific Ocean and the The Tasman Sea meet... it is an iconic spot to visit in New Zealand as it is famed for being almost the Northernmost point of the country... Cape Reinga or Te Rerenga Wairua in Maori is not only a stunningly beautiful place, it is also the most spiritually significant place for Maori culture in New Zealand... it is here that after death, all Māori spirits travel up the coast and over the wind-swept vista to the pohutukawa tree on the headland of Te Rerenga Wairua...Thanks Aaron!【ツ】

Cape Reinga Lighthouse standing at an impressive 10m in height and 165m above sea level was completed in May 1941. Built with many salvaged parts from the nearby Motuopao Island lighthouse which had served the area from 1879 until it was decommissioned due to the difficulty accessing it.

Cape Reinga Lighthouse was the last manned light built in New Zealand and was fully automated in 1987. It is now managed remotely by computer from Wellington.

The 1000-watt light bulb magnified by the lens system throws a signal of warning 49 km out to sea and is often the first light in New Zealand that sailors see.

Surville Cliffs on North Cape, 30km farther east is actually the Northern most point.

NEW ZEALAND ~ The Good Shepherd Church - Lake Tekapo - UNESCO ~

...Spectacular Starry Night view ✰✰✰... the Milky Way shining majestically above the Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo... it isn't big, it isn't fancy but it is in one of the World's few dedicated Dark Sky Zones - areas where there is little to no light pollution... and also one of the most photographed places in New Zealand... Thanks a lot Susan! (✿◠‿◠)

Looking at the sky and connecting to it sits at the heart of humanity. It’s one of the earliest activities every single culture on the planet did, and the night sky is intrinsically connected to who we are as humans.“When we start to sever that bond, we change who we are as a people. We’re changing the way we understand our world and the things that are important to us. We need to try and put together better ways of using lights and caring for our night sky.”

Lake Tekapo located in the South Alps Mountains, is a famous glacier-covered lake on New Zealand's South Island and surrounded by snow-white mountains.

The Church of the Good Shepherd was built in 1935 and named after a sculpture of a shepherd dog and made entirely of rock blocks. The area of the church is only 20 to 30 square meters, which is very small. The stone arch is so small that it can only accommodate one person to step in. There is a small stone cross on the north roof, a small bell tower on the west side of the south roof, and a small bronze bell hangs in the arched wall hole. The roof is a black stone piece.

This place is the first town in the world to be listed as a "Starry Sky Nature Reserve" by UNESCO.

NEW ZEALAND ~ Akaroa Harbour - South Island ~

.. A wonderful scenic turquoise harbour view next to rolling green hills during sunrise... once a fishing and farm service town, it now serves mainly holidaymakers and tourists... located inside the caldera of a sunken volcano, making it ideal habitat for marine mammals and birdlife... within its waters, dolphins, seals and little blue penguins can be seen for those who go on sailing tours, kayaking excursions and catamaran cruises...the Akaroa Marine Reserve lies at the mouth of the harbour...  Thanks a lot Ravindra!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

Akaroa is located on the Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region which is one of the South Island’s most interesting volcanic features. It was originally an island that was formed by two individual volcanic cones. The craters of these volcanoes are how what we know as the Lyttelton and Akaroa Harbours.

Although it is located in a former British colony, Akaroa Harbour is decidedly French as this Christchurch enclave was originally founded by pioneering French settlers in 1840, making it the only French town in all of Aotearoa.

... Great view of a unique beautiful maintained house and a vital piece of New Zealand founding history... Pompallier House is one of the few buildings in the country that can claim true historic and cultural significance... this amazing French style building is now a very interesting small museum and New Zealand’s oldest industrial building...  a place where courageous French Catholic missionaries translated religious texts into reo Māori... printed and bound them into books...  it must have been hard work back in the 1840´s to print 40.000 prayer books... it is still functional with very informative guides taking you through the book making process... formerly known as "the Hell hole of the Pacific" for its drunken and raucous behavior...  it also has a really lovely garden and nice views on the bay... a must see... Thanks a lot Susan!(✿◠‿◠)

The Kawarau River drains Lake Wakatipu, in northwestern Otago, New Zealand. The river  passes through the steep Kawarau Gorge. Containing many rapids and strong currents, the river can be dangerous and has claimed many lives.

The Remarkables are a mountain range and skifield in Otago, South Island of New Zealand. Located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, the range lives up to its name by rising sharply to create an impressive backdrop for the waters.
