UNITED KINGDOM ~The Tower of London-UNESCO~

Fantastic Tower view and Unesco card nr 2 today... sent by my niece and nephew during their weekend trip to London... Heel erg Bedankt Ben en Dorien!!

With nice matching Tower of London stamp.
These stamps are for International mail only featuring the UK's greatest lankmarks, Icons and Tourist Attractions.

Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London.
It was built at the beginning of the 11th century by William the conqueror. The tower was expanded during the 13th century into the fortified complex that we know today.

Today the Tower of London is best known for its collection Crown Jewels that has been on display here since the 17th C,  but it used to be notorious for the many political opponents of the kings that were locked, tortured and killed in the Tower.

The Tower was also a royal residence: several kings lived here, especially during turbulent times when the donjon seemed a lot safer than the palace in Westminster.

SAN MARINO REPUBLIC ~The first Tower-UNESCO~

Great postcard showing the third smallest country in Europe...Before starting collecting postcards I never heard of this place ^__^...Thanks again Luca!!

Nice stamps: From the serie Centenary of cinema The Leopard, Luchino Visconti
(Issued 14-09-1995)
and Christmas stamp "Mistletoe"
(Issued 08-11-1996)

Republic de San Marino is a country situated in the Apennine Mountains. It is a landlocked enclave, completely surrounded by Italy. Its size is just over 61 km2. Its capital is the City of San Marino.

The First Tower of San Marino, also called Guaita, is the oldest of the three towers dominating the city. Its 11th-century central dungeon, which used to shelter the first inhabitants of Mount Titano, is also the oldest fortified construction of Italy. Restored in 1930, the Tower is now opened to the public. Two surrounding walls protect the Tower and a pretty portal, decorated with a baroque-style reproduction of San Marino's coat of arms, gives access to it. From the top of the bell tower, enjoy the beautiful view on the whole region.

BELGIUM ~Yser Tower- Diksmuide~

Card bought by my hushband during his three days motorbike trip to West Flanders. He visited a few war memorials.
From 1914 to 1918 the 'Westhoek', the western part the Province of West-Flanders, was the scene of the Great War. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers of more than 20 nationalities fell in this conflict.
...I know there is a lot to read here.
But I think its very important to always remember those times....

The IJzertoren (Yser Tower) is a memorial along the Belgian Yser river in Diksmuide. There have been two IJzertorens,

The IJzertoren symbolizes the demand for Nooit meer Oorlog (Never again War), written on the tower in the four languages of the fighting forces in the area during the First World War (Dutch, French, English and German). The rebuilt tower (84 m) is the highest peace monument in Europe.

All Belgian soldiers who fell, including the numerous Flemish boys, were given an official tombstone with the French inscription ‘Mort pour la Patrie’. To give the Flemish a Flemish tombstone, in 1916, the ‘Comité voor Heldenhulde’ (committee for hero’s tribute) was founded. With the money they collected among the Flemish soldiers, they created the famous ‘Heldenhuldezerkjes’: a cross with the inscription AVV-VVK (Alles voor Vlaanderen – Vlaanderen voor Kristus: All for Flanders – Flanders for Christ).

BELARUS ~Grodno Water Towers~

<
The city Grodno is located 300 kilometers away from Minsk. The building of the Towers was ended in 1910. People call them "Kasja" and "Basja". They are painted in cheerful yellow and pink colors. Inside are located the workshops of Grodno artists.
