Nordkapp  sits on the northern coast of the island of Magerøya and was named by English navigator and arctic explorer Steven Borough, captain of the Edward Bonaventure, who sailed past the cliff in 1553 in search of the Northeast Passage shipping route. In 1664, Italian priest Francesco Negri became the first person known to have traveled to Nordkapp. King Oscar II, Union King of Norway and Sweden, visited in 1873, and in 1956 the first road to Nordkapp was built. Beyond Nordkapp, the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean.

In addition to the globe, several other monuments are scattered around Nordkapp. An obelisk honoring King Oscar II sits at one end of the plateau, and the Milestone Monument points out to sea at the other end. Artist Eva Rybakken’s sculpture “Mother and Child” is encircled by the Children of the Earth monument. Children of the Earth was created in 1988 by seven children from different parts of the world who gathered at Nordkapp to illustrate symbols of cooperation, friendship, hope and joy.

Bergen is Norway's second largest city and derives it name from the word Bjørgvin, which translates as "the meadow below the mountains".

The city has been ravaged by many fires, the great fire of 1702 in particular. It reduced the whole of the city to ashes. The area was rebuilt on the foundations that had been there since the 12th century, which means that Bryggen is basically unchanged despite the passing centuries which is a relic of an ancient wooden urban structure once common in Northern Europe.Today, some 60 buildings remain of this former townscape.

German merchants of the Hanseatic League lived in Bryggen from the mid-14thC for the best part of 400 years, trading in dried fish and grain.

Bryggen has been on the UNESCO WHS list since 1979.

NORWAY ~ The Oseberg Ship - Oslo - UNESCO tentative list ~

... Beautiful view of the most famous and impressive ship of the Viking Ship Museum which is still nearly intact... a graceful boat with an elaborately carved prow and stern.... the vessel had been crushed by the weight of clay, turf, and stones under which it was buried... the blue clay of the mound preserved the wood, particularly the oak, ash, pine, and yew parts for longer than a millenium... in 1926, the delicate ship was moved to her new, custom-made home where she still stands today... now closed, but the museum will re-open in 2025 as a brand new and bigger one, giving more space to artifacts... Thanks a lot Kat!❀◕ ‿ ◕❀

© Photo: Mittet Foto AS

The Oseberg ship, was built in AD 820, buried in a grave mound 14 years later, and excavated in 1904. Shortly after the excavation, the 21.5m long and 5.0m wide ship was re-assembled and exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum, in Bygdøy, Oslo.

When the burial mound was excavated – it is named after the farm it was found on – the remains of two women were discovered, one of these must have held great rank to have such a grand send off.

Underneath the boat a chamber contained the most Viking-era finds ever to be found in Scandinavia.

NORWAY ~ Borgund Stave Church ~

... Beautiful view of one of Norway's famous landmarks and most visited Stave Church in the country... an iconic feature of wooden architecture in a rural landscape... they are entirely made of wood, even the nails... the carvings on and in Stave Churches are often a mix of Norse mythology and Christianity... this simple, yet elegant, black wooden church is no longer used for church functions, it’s now a museum... these Stave Churches are the oldest preserved wooden churches in Christianity... Heel Erg Bedankt Ben en Loes! (✿ ♥‿♥)

It was built sometime between 1180 and 1250 AD with later additions and restorations. Today, only 28 stave churches remain in Norway. The majority of these historical churches are located in the Fjords and southeast Norway.

Its walls are formed by vertical wooden boards, or staves, hence the name "stave church." The four corner posts are connected to one another by ground sills, resting on a stone foundation.

The church has similar Nordic carvings as found on Viking ships with crafted joints and no nails or glue. There are four dragon heads at the top of the steeple on the gable ridges.

The church interior is dark, as not much daylight enters the building. Some of the few sources of natural light are narrow circular windows along the roof, examples of daylighting. It was supposed that the narrow apertures would prevent the entry of evil spirits.

NORWAY ~ The Rock Art of Alta - UNESCO ~

.... Lovely view of Rock Art and carvings that shows that Alta was an important meeting place in the far north... people have lived in the area for several thousands of years... Hjemmeluftbukta (Northern Sámi: Jiepmaluokta) is the main site for the rock carvings with about 3,000 individual carvings... scenes depict hunting, gathering and fishing as well as dancing and rituals... many of the older carvings were painted red in the 1970s to make them more visible which was normal practice at the time... however, this process is now being reversed to preserve the authenticity of the art, even though some of the carvings will be harder to see on cloudy  days... the outdoor carvings are accessible during the snow-free season (typically May to October) but the indoor exhibitions are open year-round... a unique and well preserved site with also fantastic views over the Alta Fjord... Thanks a lot Andrene! (✿◠‿◠)

The property is situated in the northernmost part of Norway, far north of the Arctic Circle.

Located at 45 sites in five different areas at the head of the Alta Fjord (Kåfjord, Hjemmeluft, Storsteinen, Amtmannsnes and Transfarelvdalen). Today in total, there are more than 6000 registered carvings and paintings spread out over some 100 panels made between ca 7,000 to 2,000 years ago.

Despite the age of the engravings, we've actually only known about them for little more than 50 years. Rock art was first discovered in the area in 1950, but most of it wasn't found for another 20 years.

The rock art in Alta was inscribed on the World Heritage List in December 1985.

NORWAY ~ Reine - Moskenes island - Lofoten ~

... Amazing sunrise of one of Norway’s most famous and photographed fishing villages... a beautiful picturesque place surrounded by steep mountains shooting out of the fjord Reinefjorden, sea, small islands, inlets, and fjords.... it consists of several small islands, all connected by bridges... and it is the perfect place to stay at a traditional (now renovated and modernized) fishermen’s cabin, called rorbuer... there are also several popular hikes around Reine... Heel Erg Bedankt Gerlinde voor deze leuke verrrassing! (✿ ♥‿♥)

Moskenes is the name of the southernmost island in Lofoten located just 200 km from the Arctic Circle. The waters around Moskenes are ideal deep-sea fishing territory, hundreds of cod weighing more than 30kg are caught every year. Reine is the administrative centre of Moskenes Municipality in Nordland county.

It owes its name "Lofoten" to its form, that of the footprint of a lynx. The name of Lofoten originated from the shape of one of the islands. If seen from above, it reminded of a lynx’s paw. In ancient Scandinavian language “ló” means lynx and “fót” means “foot”, hence we get “lofot”. Through time, the entire archipelago was called under the name of Lofoten.

NORWAY ~ Nusfjord - The Lofoten Islands ~

... Wonderful views of a small fishing village on the coastline of Flakstadøya island... it’s one of the most picturesque spots on Norway’s Lofoten islands... and often regarded as one of the oldest and best preserved fishing villages in the country with a long-standing tradition of “Lofotfiske”, or seasonal cod fishing.... nowadays Nusfjord is more of a museum with less than a hundred inhabitants remaining... sailing ships dominate the fjord and the rocky beauty of the island is masked by vast forests... here you can experience everything from the magical midnight sun in the summer to the spectacular northern lights in winter... plenty of people want to visit from all over the world... Thanks a lot Marit!【ツ】
The Lofoten archipelago is located north of the Arctic Circle in the county of Nordland, Norway. The Lofoten archipelago consist of 7 main islands, with fjords and narrow straits in between the islands. Between the mainland and the Lofoten lies the open Vestfjord.

The archipelago is known for a distinctive scenery with mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. A high density of sea eagles and cormorants, and millions of other sea birds, like the colourful puffin, populate the islands, with mainland Europe’s largest seabird colony.

Due to the warm Gulf Stream, Lofoten has a much milder climate than other parts of the world at the same latitude, such as Alaska and Greenland and Siberia. So winters are mild and the summers relatively cool.
