... One of the most well-known islands in the Philippines... as the site of two of the most heroic and crucial battles in World War II, it continues to hold special significance to all Filipinos for everything that it symbolized... Corregidor played an important role during the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from Japanese forces.... heavily bombarded in the latter part of the war, the ruins left on the island serves as a military memorial to several American, Filipino and Japanese soldiers who served and lost their lives on the island... alongside the silent cannons and rusting artillery are numerous memorials for their war heroes... today it is historic monument as well as a tourist destination.... Thanks a lot Sherill! (◡‿◡✿)

Corregidor Island, als known as " The Rock" because of its rocky landscape and heavy fortifications on the island, is  the largest of the five islands guarding the entrance to Manila Bay in southwestern part of Luzon.

American colonizers built full-scale fortifications on the island, complete with long-range tractor guns, anti-aircraft guns, tunnels, an underground command center, and a hospital for wounded soldiers.

GREECE ~ Oia - Santorini ~

... And the surprises keep coming with postcards of the most breathtakingly beautiful Greece islands💙...  Santorini is a well-known island of the Cyclades with iconic cliffside setting ... picturesque Oia is famous for its magical sunsets... with its windmill, narrow streets, blue domes and typical "cave houses"... to this day laws protect the natural and architectural beauty of the town from modern manifestations, such as public electrical wires... Big Thanks dear Glenn for taking me with you on your cruise holiday!! (>‿♥)

Santorini (known locally as Thira) is the remnant of a volcano in the middle of the sea, which in the last 2 million years has erupted at least 12 times.  As a result of devastating eruptions that this island gets its unique shape like a crescent moon.

According to legend, the island is formed from a strip of land that was thrown into the ocean from the Argo, the ship of Greek mythology.

Oia is a small community on the island. Along the cliff of Oia, houses have been delved into the porous volcanic rock (left over from a large volcanic explosion many years ago that sunk the center of the island).

Parts of these houses are visible and the scenery that results from it is generally perceived as being typically Greek.

Mykonos is part of the Cyclades almost in the centre of the Aegean Sea.

In Greek mythology, Mykonos was named after its first ruler, Mykonos, the son or grandson of the god Apollo and a local hero.

Also according to mythology, the island was the place where Heracles killed the giants. The rocks around the island are supposedly their corpses!!!

GERMANY ~ Common Seal - Westerland - Sylt - Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park ~

... The cutest seal pup sunbathing and waving hello... on the island there are several areas where they like to stay... there are also boat tours to the sandbanks to watch seals... with so lovely a matching stamp and postmark from the Seal Caring Station in Norddeich... this station is a facility for raising young seals who were separated from their mothers due to storms, disease or human disturbance and who would otherwise have little chance of survival... Thanks a lot dear Dustin for once more a unique philatelic item!! ♥(ˆ⌣ˆԅ) ➝ My postcard and stamp week

Moinsager is a vacation home in Westerland,  a seaside town located on the German North Sea island of Sylt. It is the northernmost and largest North Sea island.  And the largest resort on the island, the local transportation hub and the centre of Sylt's tourist industry.

The Common Seal or Harbour Seal, is a true seal of the Northern Hemisphere, they inhabit the waters of the north Atlantic and north Pacific Oceans. They vary in color from black and brownish to tan or grey. Their heads are rather round and the eyes fairly large.  As all other true seals (pinnipeda) their lack earflaps,  meaning their ear canal can be seen behind their eyes. The fore flippers are relatively small, flexible and equipped with five digits. The milk of common seals contains as much as 45% milk fat. This enables the pup to more than double its weight by the time it's weaned.

AUSTRALIA ~ Southern Elephant Seals - Heard Island - UNESCO ~

... Fantastic postcard of one of the most isolated islands on our planet... and one of the most rare pristine island ecosystems...  it is very dangerous and almost impossible to reach this island... you have to pass through some of the roughest seas on the planet to get there... for those reasons, there are currently no commercial tour operations that visit Heard Island... no-one lives permanently on the island and there is no Post Office, so unfortunately it's not possible to receive a postcard directly from Heard Island... as environmental conditions have improved around Heard Island in recent years, southern elephant seal populations have stabilized... Thanks a lot Xue!! (✿ ♥‿♥)

"Canada 150" with 10 unforgettable moments from the past 50 years... Thanks so much dear Glenn!!¯\_(ツ)_/¯  I loved this postcard from the moment I saw it on your postcard blog!!  (>‿♥)

Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site, on Fisgard Island at the mouth of Esquimalt Harbour in Colwood, British Columbia, is the site of Fisgard Lighthouse, the first lighthouse on the west coast of Canada. The Lighthouse was built in 1860 to guide vessels through the entrance of Esquimalt harbour.

It was July 1, 1867, that the British North America Act united the British provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario into the Dominion of Canada.

The name Canada wasn't established in 1867, however; it's derived from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement” and had been in use since the 16th century, when locals pointed French explorer Jacques Cartier in the direction of the "village" now known as Québec City.

SRI LANKA ~ Sir Frederick North's Bungalow - Arippu - Mannar Island ~

... Nice postcard nr10 issued by Sri Lankan post showing unseen places of natural beauty... part of the island's heritage... with the amazing history about the colonial rulers, harvesting and clearing all the pearls in the sea, using local and Indian slave labour... but time showed the ravages of nature on this building... sea breeze, corroded by the wind, washed by the rains and lack of maintenance were the key reasons for this... with great matching stamp... Thanks a lot dear Ravindra!!  \_(♥‿♥)_/

Used by Sri Lanka's first British Governor, Sir Frederick North (1798-1805).

It was built at the beginning of the 19thC  (between 1801-1804) to revive and supervise the pearl fisheries. Other than being used as the residence for the governor, it was later used by "other governors, government agents, and other officials, including superintendents of pearl fishery."

Doric was so named, due to the architectural design of the columns which was similar to the Ancient Greek Doric order style.

Reverend James Cordiner, then Chaplain to the British Military, writes in his Description of Ceylon that at the time, Doric was "undoubtedly the most beautiful building on the island and almost the only one which is planned according to architecture."

... The perfect postcard to celebrate this special day... awesome nature beauty... Lake Baikal is one of the main wonders in Russia....the oldest, most beautiful, purest and deepest freshwater lake in the world... with a surface area bigger than Belgium, it contains nearly one quarter of all the world's freshwater, which is more than the five American Great Lakes combined... it's on the Olkhon Island, the heart of Lake Baikal... Thanks a lot Irina!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Photo:Ⓒ Andrei Grachow

Lake Baikal, located in south-east Siberia is the world's oldest lake, estimated to be approximately 25 million years old.  It was formed as a rift valley (earth's crust slowly pulls apart) and is crescent shaped. Lake Baikal is 79 km wide and 636 km in length. The coastline is roughly 2100 kms.

Olkhon is the fourth-largest lake-bound island in the world. It is by far the largest island in Lake Baikal.

Pribaikalsky National Park covers the southwest coast of Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. The coastal strip includes some mountain ridges to the west as well as offshore islands such as Olkhon Island to the east.

The lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

MALTA ~ Gozo & Comino ~

Malta is comprised of an archipelago of 6 islands situated south of Sicily and east of Tunisia. North of the mainland lies Comino and north of that Gozo. It gained independence from the UK in 1964.

Just 20 kilometres and 20 minutes ferry ride from mainland Malta’s port of Cirkewwa, Gozo remains an unspoilt land of farmers and fishermen. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago.

Comino was named after the plentiful cumin (flowering plant) that grows on the island. The entire island is classified as a wildlife sanctuary nowadays.
