SERBIA ~ Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul - Novi Pazar - Unesco ~

... Nice view of a Serbian Orthodox church (the East side)... considered as the oldest intact church in Serbia and one of the oldest in the region with a great religious, architectural and cultural value... located on a tranquil hill in Ras the former capital of medieval Serbia... above the city of Nova Pazar... it has been the site of many archaeological excavations and valuable items have been found here... apart from being a religious object, it is also partly a museum, which has many artefacts which date centuries ago... interestingly, this area today is almost completely Muslim... Thanks a lot Laco!【惄】

Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the church was founded in the 4thC during Roman rule, while additions were made in the 7th and 9thC, after which it served as the ecclesiastical seat of the Serbian church, and as the baptismal church and state council site of the Nemanjić dynasty, until the last years of the 12thC.

As part of the larger Old Ras medieval complex, the church was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, which includes the nearby monasteries of Sopoćani and Đurđevi Stupovi, as well as the fortress of Old Ras.

Serbia is situated in Southeast Europe, a landlocked country that was previously part of Yugoslavia. Serbia and Montenegro formed a union after Yugoslavia collapsed, but the two separated in 2006. Since then, the country has struggled with ethnic conflict between Christian Serbs and Muslim Kosovo Albanians. Kosovo, a region in Serbia – declared independence in 2008.

Nov Sad is he second-largest city in the country, And the administrative and commercial centre of the Serbian province of Vojvodina.

The Petrovaradin Fortress has existed since Roman times, but what you see today dates from the late 17th and early 18thC and was built to protect the city from the Turkish. The great French military architect, Vauban, oversaw its construction. This fortress is situated on the right bank of the Danube River, the second largest river in Europe after the Volga River, flowing through 10 countries in Central and Eastern Europe before it reaches the Black Sea.

SERBIA ~Saint Nicholas Cathedral - Sremski Karlovci ~

...Pretty panoramic view....a lovely Baroque church on the main square... this very old Eastern Orthodox Church has played a significant role in Serbian history... definitely worth a visit... Thanks Raffi!!ヽ(情)惎

Sremski Karlovci is located in northern Serbia, on the gentle slopes of the FruÅ”ka gora mountain and the banks of the Danube river. This small town was the  Serbian religious center in 18th century.

The Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas was started in 1758 and completed in 1762 and dedicated to St. Nicolas. This single-nave church is one of the most beautiful examples of the 18thC architecture in Vojvodina.

Its iconostasis is regarded as the masterpiece of the Serbian baroque painting. The coffin containing the holy relics of the second Serbian archbishop, St. Arsenije Sremac, is located in front of the iconostasis. The church got its present appearance after the reconstruction carried out in 1909 and 1910.
