INDONESIA ~ Lorentz National Park - Papua - UNESCO ~

... Lovely views of a hidden paradise in the Papua region on the island of New Guinea. ... this is the largest protected natural area in South-East Asia and the only protected area in the world to include a full range of habitats and ecological gradients from snow-capped mountain peaks to a tropical marine environment... but despite its stunning beauty, Lorentz National Park has not escaped the challenge of preservation... climate change, exploitation of natural resources, and deforestation pose serious threats to the fragile ecosystems within it... hopefully through ongoing conservation efforts and awareness of the importance of preserving nature, this National Park will not only be a natural tourist spot, but also a guardian of natural wonders that must be carefully guarded... Thanks Serisa!【ツ】

This national park land covers an area of about  27.056 km² and stretches across three provinces, namely Highland Papua, Central Papua, and South Papua. Summarized from various sources, the name of the National Park comes from the Dutch scientist and explorer H.A. Lorentz, who explored the interior of Papua to the Mandala mountains in 1909.

Lorentz National Park is home to a number of rare and unique species of flora and fauna. No less than 630 species of birds and more than 120 mammals have been identified in this area, including birds of paradise, cassowaries, tree kangaroos, and various types of wild orchids.

The National Parks area is also host to significant cultural wealth, with dozens of indigenous ethnic groups living in and around the park area who have adapted harmoniously to their environment for thousands of years.

AUSTRALIA ~ Murujuga Cultural Landscape - UNESCO ~

... Great view featuring one of the world’s oldest and densest known rock art collection... it's not an extremely large area, but it's packed with an estimated of one million petroglyphs etched across the region’s ancient cliff faces... what's truly amazing about Murujuga is the incredible variety of petroglyphs, in both age and subject matter: the oldest petroglyphs here have been dated at around 40,000 years old, while some are as recent as the 19th century... especially notable are the depictions of human figures; they continue to be part of the traditions and beliefs of the Ngurra-ra Ngarl... also the sheer number of animal petroglyphs provide a fascinating showcase of how the local fauna has changed over the millennia... there is a very clear petroglyph of a thylacine (aka Tasmanian Tiger), which has been extinct on mainland Australia for at least 20,000 years... Thanks Helen! (✿◠‿◠)

© Magpie Postcards

The cultural landscape is centred on Murujuga National Park, part of the Burrup Peninsula in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. It's located on the traditional lands of the Ngarda-Ngarli people. Murujuga was declared a National Park in 2013, covering an area of 48.51 km2.

The park is privately owned by the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and jointly managed with WA’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions – Parks and Wildlife Service who work together to preserve the site’s cultural and environmental significance.

COSTA RICA ~ Arenal Volcano/Lake - La Fortuna ~

... Wonderful nature view of a volcano rising majestically from the lush rainforest one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks... its nearly perfect cone has defined the skyline of La Fortuna... the most prominent feature of the Arenal Volcano National Park... at the foot of the volcano lies Lake Arenal, Costa Rica’s largest lake creating a picturesque view of the two together... while the lake is a stunning natural attraction today, its history is deeply tied to Costa Rica’s development... in 1974, the lake was expanded to create a hydroelectric reservoir, submerging several villages in the process... this transformation turned the lake into a crucial source of renewable energy, now powering nearly 70% of the country’s electricity needs... beyond its functional importance, the lake is a hub for recreation... this region offers a breathtaking mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural heritage, making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Costa Rica’s volcanoes and Costa Rica lakes... SABA ~ National Marine Park ~

... Great underwater views and my first postcard of the smallest Caribbean island👍... Saba is unique, beautiful and pristine due to its lack of sand-filled beaches and volcanic nature... however, this provides the island with rocky shores and stunning, sheer cliffs, which also extend below the surface... affectionately known as "The Unspoiled Queen" a tiny speck of a former volcano... it is a premier destination for world-class eco-tourism, hiking  Mount Scenery and diving...  the islands relative anonymity means it remains unscathed by hordes of tourists... but landing at Saba’s Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is considered one of the world's most challenging, featuring the shortest commercial runway at just 400 meters... surrounded by steep hills and ocean cliffs, it requires specialized STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft and expert pilots to land on the tiny strip ( watched it on You Tube🫨)... Big Thanks Diego for being a small part of your Caribbean adventure! (✿ ♥‿♥)

Photo: Chad Nutall

Saba is a 13 km2 Caribbean island  located in the Lesser Antilles. and a special municipality of the Netherlands. It is dominated by Mount Scenery, an 870-meter volcano. The capital of Saba is called The Bottom, named for literally being on the bottom of the island.

The Saba volcano is potentially dangerous. It is currently classified as "dormant", which means it is an active volcano that is not erupting now, but could erupt in the future

The Saba National Marine Park encompasses the waters and sea bed encircling the island of Saba from the high watermark to 60 m deep and established in 1987 to protect vibrant coral reefs, dramatic underwater pinnacles, and thriving marine life.

... Great view of a Golden Monkey, a type of monkey species of Old World monkeys and endemic to Nyungwe forest... these monkeys are one of the 13 primate species found in Nyungwe, alongside more common species like chimpanzees and various colobus monkeys... they inhabited the forest's mid-altitude zones especially highlands and near to bamboo, between 1500 and 2000 meters... a small, estimated population of 300+ golden monkeys resides in Nyungwe... considered to be one of the rarest primates in the forest... though sightings are less frequent here than in parks like Volcanoes National Park... one of the park's most thrilling experiences is the forest canopy walkway... a 160 meter long walkway suspended between giant trees, 60 metres above the forest floor... the walkway offers incredible views of the forest's upper canopies and is a great opportunity to spot wildlife and birds... MALAWI ~ Kasungu National Park ~

... Great new African National Park to add to my collection💚...  the landscape consists of woodland and bush, grassland and low-rising hills, small lakes and wide marshy areas with rampant rivers in the rainy season... the park was once home to around 1,200 elephants in the 1970s but rampant poaching over the years reduced the population to a mere 49 by 2015... the International Fund for Animal Welfare has been working in Kasungu since 2015 to address law enforcement, wildlife crime, infrastructure and capacity within the park... by reducing poaching in the park, the elephant population has grown to an estimated 120 individuals... in 2022, 263 elephants were moved from Liwonde National Park  to the much larger Kasungu Park... while the move sounded like a good idea on paper, the elephants' new home was not fenced... immediately, they began wandering out of the park - destroying property, eating crops and killing people in both Malawi and Zambia... several years later, this terrible situation is still not resolved...  so time has proved that translocating wild elephants isn't always the best option... Thanks Emmanuel!【ツ】

Kasungu stretches along the Zambian border and is Malawi’s second largest national park covering approximately 2,000 square kilometres. (which is four times the size of Liwonde National Park). It is located in the central region and rises about 1000 meters above sea level and was established in 1970.

UK ~Carreg Cennen Castle - Llansteffan - Brecon Beacons National Park - Wales ~

... Beautiful autumn🍂 view showing an impressive castle ruin against a backdrop of the changing Carmarthenshire landscape, which turns brilliant reds, browns, and yellows in fall... a striking fortress perched on a limestone cliff top that dominates the skyline for miles around with stunning views over the countryside... there isn’t a huge amount to see inside the castle... but the ruins are enough intact to imagine what life was like there... a few interesting features still remain, including parts of the inner ward, a small walkway and the remains of a few towers to explore... the cave underneath is a real treat... these ruins in south Wales have a rich history, bound up in power struggles between the Welsh and English and the Wars of the Roses... located within the Brecon Beacons National Park...Thanks Paul!(✿◠‿◠) What a wonderful area to live in!😊

©Dave Newbould

Carreg Cennen was originally the site of a native Welsh castle, possibly constructed by The Lord Rhys (d. 1197), although any remains of this castle have been subsumed by later English work. The current stone structure was built by the English baron John Giffard for Edward I in the late 13th century, and it served as a key stronghold during the conquest of Wales. The castle was damaged during Owain Glyndŵr's rebellion and was later slighted in 1462 during the Wars of the Roses to prevent further use.
