GERMANY ~ Evening by the Sea - Carl Gustav Carus ~

... Evening by the Sea (Abend am Meer) is a serene oil painting by German Romantic artist Carl Gustav Carus, created between 1820 and 1825... the artwork captures a tranquil coastal sunset, embodying the Romanticism movement's deep reverence for nature and emotional introspection that reflects the Romantic era's... the work is believed to be inspired by the rugged, volcanic coastlines around the Bay of Naples or the island of Capri, which Carus visited on his extensive travels... the original is housed at the Kunsthalle Bremen... Thanks Dustin!【ツ】

Carl Gustav Carus (1789 – 1869) born in Leipzig, was a German physician, natural philosopher, and Romantic landscape painter who integrated scientific observation with artistic expression during the early 19th century. His landscape paintings emphasize atmospheric effects, particularly moonlight illuminating ruins, rivers, and forests.

... Great city view showing the Potsdam City Palace in the foreground, with the prominent dome of St. Nicholas' Church visible in the background... located right at the heart of the city's historic center at the Old Market Square... rebuilt in the historical Baroque style... nowadays it serves as the seat of the Landtag of Brandenburg (the state parliament)... Potsdam is known for its magnificent palaces and gardens... with nice stamp and special postmark of Luise Queen of Prussia and the mother of Emperor William I... during her time as crown princes she partly lived in this place...Thanks a lot Dustin!ヽ(•‿•)ノ

After the war, Potsdam fell under Soviet occupation and later the communist German Democratic Republic (1949-1990) which destroyed the building in 1960 for ideological reasons. Following the fall of Communism and German reunification in 1990, the former palace was rebuilt (2010-2013).

GERMANY ~ Cologne Cathedral - UNESCO ~

.. Beautiful aerial winter view of a spectacular masterpiece of one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture in the world... standing proudly on the banks of the Rhine River... probably Germany's most known religious structure that includes two huge twin spires that serve as the defining symbol of Cologne's skyline... Cologne Cathedral is 157 metres tall and was under construction for over 600 years... the iconic blackened facade is a natural reaction between weathering and the city air... the platform of the southern tower provides visitors with a fantastic panoramic view from a height of about 97 meters... with over 6 million visitors per year it is the most visited landmark in Germany... cute "Spongebob" stamp and great special postmarks👍...  Thanks Dustin!【ツ】

Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine, near Germany's borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. It is Germany’s fourth-largest city and one of the oldest cities in the country.

In 1248, the construction of the Cathedral was started. Until 1560 the work on this Gothic Cathedral was in progress, but an accumulation of problems prevented it to be finished. Only during the 19thC the Cathedral was finally completed, stimulated by Emperor William I. Not anymore as a pure construction to honor God, but also as a national Prussian symbol.

It was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996.

GERMANY ~ Augustusburg Castle - Brühl - UNESCO ~

... Beautiful view of an imposing palace set in an idyllic French-style garden landscape... this summer residence is located on a hill and is therefore always visible from afar... Germany’s best preserved example of Rococo architecture and the first important example of this style... and an outstanding example of a great 18th century princely residence... the stunning marble grand staircase and intricate gold-leaf details are only the beginning of what you’ll experience at Augustusburg... ever since it became a museum in 1922, the Castle has been home to high quality exhibitions... Thanks Marcel!ヽ(•‿•)ノ

It was on the ruins of a middle age castle that Archbishop Clemens August ordered Schloss Augustusburg be built. Beginning in 1728 under François de Cuvilliés, Bavarian architect to the imperial court, Schloss Augustusburg was designed and decorated to stand as the preeminent residence of its time. Artists renowned across Europe worked on the Schloss up until its completion in 1768.

Schloss Augustusburg was badly damaged by the end of the Second World War. Nevertheless efforts to restore it to its previous splendour had already begun by 1946.

The Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces are a complex of historic buildings which have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. The buildings are connected by the spacious gardens and trees of the palace park.

GERMANY ~ Der Himmel über Berlin ~

...This image depicts an iconic moment from the 1987 film *Der Himmel über Berlin* (known internationally as *Wings of Desire*)... Wim Wenders' astonishing, award-winning fantasy drama depicts life in a divided Berlin through the eyes of angels... the constant contrast with the pain of humanity, the overlooking Berlin wall, and the distant memories of WWII scattered throughout give this film deeper depth... a poetic and melancholic film... Thanks Dustin!(✿◠‿◠)

Two angels, Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander), glide through the streets of Berlin, observing the bustling population, providing invisible rays of hope to the distressed but never interacting with them. When Damiel falls in love with lonely trapeze artist Marion (Solveig Dommartin), the angel longs to experience life in the physical world, and finds—with some words of wisdom from actor Peter Falk (playing himself)—that it might be possible for him to take human form.

GERMANY ~ Suspension Railway Sonnborner Bridge - Wuppertal ~

... Nice 1960 vintage view of a famous suspended monorail... a "must-see" hidden gem and a unique, futuristic, "flying" train experience... this 13km monorail at a height of about 12 metres acts as both daily transit and a top tourist attraction, gliding over the Wupper River and passes streets... although it's the world's oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars and also one of the longest, it was modernized in 2016-2018... the Schwebebahn is a unique piece of industrial history... with great matching stamp and special postmark celebrating 125 Years of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway... Thanks Dustin!【ツ】

Its construction went back to the late 1800s, when three neighbouring towns became interested in connecting through public transport. Due to the hilly landscape, traditional and railway seemed impractical, but a suspension railway could easily follow the river Wupper, along which they were all located. This unique public transport system was designed by engineer Eugen Langen and began operating in 1901.

GERMANY ~ The Green Bunker - Hamburg ~

... Great view of the Green Bunker... a major, newly revitalized landmark in the city... a transformation from a WWII-era bunker into a lush, sustainable urban forest... to reach the very top you must first conquer 389 steps and 560 meters along the so-called mountain path... it winds its way upwards around the bunker via ramps and stairs... the path leads not only past the concrete walls of the old bunker, but also past the five new, terraced floors built on the bunker roof...  around 4,800 trees and 16,000 perennials line the path, green the facade and grow in the public garden on the roof... the roof offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Hamburg, including the Elbphilharmonie, harbor, and Millerntor Stadium... with nice "related" stamp and special postmark of Father Bernhard Lichtenberg, a German priest who spoke out actively against Nazism and its persecution of Jews... Thanks Dusin!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

Officially the Bunker St. Pauli on Feldstraße was built between 1940 and 1942 during World War II by forced laborers. The distinctive turrets at the building's corners indicate that it was a so-called flak bunker, on which anti-aircraft guns were mounted. Inside were shelters for the civilian population. During the bombing raids on Hamburg, up to 25,000 people sought refuge there.

After the war, the bunker initially housed emergency accommodations; for a time, the Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR), the predecessor of the NDR, used the space.

Later, businesses, agencies, and music clubs moved into the massive concrete structure. The floors on the bunker's roof contain a hotel, a restaurant, and a multi-purpose hall with a capacity of up to 2,200 people. The conversion into the Green Bunker began in 2019 and was completed in the summer of 2024.

The original Gothic furnishings are still preserved in the upper floor room, including a pointed-arch light niche with a smoke vent, largely unchanged exterior walls with incised joints, and a painted wooden beam ceiling.  Beneath the building is a medieval cellar with a Romanesque portal. ... Nice views of the "Mikwe" a rare monumental, and well-preserved medieval ritual bath situated in the former Jewish quarter located directly on the banks of the Gera River, which provided the necessary flowing water... the water supply in the basin still works today... you can view the ancient Mikwe bath at any time through a window in the top of the shelter, or for a closer look, you must join one of the guided tours... in addition to the synagogue and cemetery, a mikveh was (and is) an important part of Jewish ritual cleansing after contact with the dead, blood, or other religiously impure things... today, a modern building serves to protect the archaeological find... GERMANY ~ Birth House Beethoven - Bonn ~

... Lovely view of the birth house of one of the greatest composers 🎶🎶🎶 of all time, the legendary Ludwig Van Beethoven... it is one of the world's most visited music museums... the Beethoven family lived for some years in this yellow house which today houses the world's largest collection of Beethoven memorabilia, including original manuscripts, instruments (violins, his last grand piano), ear trumpets, and portraits... there is also a chamber music hall in the rear building that hosts concerts and plays recordings... since 2019, the museum has been hosting a new and enlarged permanent exhibition... it provides a new approach to experiencing Beethoven as an artist and fellow human being in a modern, inspiring and exciting way... this museum is well worth the visit and definitely a historical landmark of the city... Thanks a lot Dustin!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 and died in 1827.  His father, who was a singer, was his first teacher. After a while, even though he was still only a boy, Ludwig became a traveling performer, and soon, he was supporting his family.

In his early twenties, Beethoven moved to Vienna, where he spent the rest of his life. Beethoven was one of the first composers to make a living without being employed by the church or a member of the nobility. At first, he was known as a brilliant pianist. But when he was around 30 years old, Beethoven started going deaf. Even though he could no longer hear well enough to play the piano, Beethoven composed some of his best music after he was deaf. Beethoven's most famous symphony is widely considered to be his Symphony No. 5 in C minor.
