UGANDA ~ Mountain Gorilla - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - UNESCO ~

...  Great view of a silverback mountain gorilla🦍... known for their distinctive silver-colored hair on their backs, indicating maturity... gorillas are the largest living primate and one of humans closest living relatives... like human thumbprints, the mountain gorilla has a nose print unique to each individual... the mountain gorilla is a strong, peaceful ape which inhabits the volcanic African slopes... Uganda has more than half of the world's mountain gorilla population... and they are very well protected because of their importance for tourism... mountain gorilla tourism generates more foreign currency than any other activity in Uganda today... proceeds from gorilla tourism support the conservation of most of the other National Parks and Reserves... Thanks Alena! ¯\_(ツ)_/

Mountain gorillas are the bulkiest and most powerful living primates. An average male mountain gorilla can weigh 136 to 230 kilograms and reach a standing height of 1.2 - 1.8 meters. Mountain gorillas live only in high-altitude montane and bamboo forests, between 1,400 m to 3,800 meters. These gorillas have longer, thicker fur, and more of it, than other gorilla subspecies, allowing them to live in colder climates where temperatures can drop below freezing. Like all gorillas, mountain gorillas are highly sociable and live in family groups led by the dominant silverback. They are largely herbivorous and eat a variety of shoots, fruit, leaves and bark, wild celery is a big favourite. In the wild, mountain gorillas can live up to 35 years old.

Located in south-western Uganda, at the junction of the plain and mountain forests, Bwindi Park covers 32,000 ha and is known for its exceptional biodiversity. The park protects an estimated 459 gorillas and is also a habitat for chimpanzees, over 350 bird species, 120 other mammals, and numerous plant species.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994

UGANDA ~ Map & Shoebill Stork ~

... Lovely designed postcard with country map and Shoebill stork... a strange and fascinating bird of the African wetlands... it contributes to the preservation of aquatic ecosystems by filtering water, highlighting the importance of conservation for these unusual species... this prehistoric looking wading bird is so rare and shy that European scientists only discovered it in 1850 during expeditions in the vast marshlands of Africa, near the sources of the Nile... they are solitary birds and feeds on fish, but also on snakes, frogs, young monitor lizards or crocodiles, which it swallows whole while stirring up the mud with its peculiar beak... Shoebill Storks are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, disturbance, and hunting... Thanks a lot Alena! (✿◠‿◠)

Shoebills are very tall birds. They usually stand about 110 to 140 cm high. Their wings can spread out very wide, from 230 to 260 cm. The most special thing about the shoebill is its giant, bulb-shaped bill It looks like a straw-colored shoe 25 cm long and 10 cm wide with grey marks. This bill is one of the longest among all birds. It is also very wide, like a pelican's bill. The top part of the bill has a strong ridge and ends in a sharp point. Shoebills have long, dark legs and very large feet. Their big feet help them stand on plants floating in the water while they hunt. Their neck is shorter and thicker than other long-legged birds.

UGANDA ~ Chimpanzees - Kibale Forest National Park ~

... Another great new African National Park👍... Kibale forest is known for hosting the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda, about 1,500 living among its dense, sprawling canopy.... the best place for chimpanzee trekking on the African continent... it is home to five habituated groups of chimpanzees, which have become so used to human interaction that a close encounter is likely...  Thanks a lot Alena!❁◕ ‿ ◕❁

Kibale National Park is located in Western Uganda, protecting moist evergreen rain forest. It is 766 square kilometres in size and is located between 1,100m to 1,600m in elevation established in 1993.

Chimpanzees are the closest relatives to humans sharing about 98% of their DNA composition with humans. They are sociable animals and their groups can be comprised of anywhere between 10 and 100 members.

As well as chimpanzees, Kibale Forest homes 12 other species of primates, including the black and white colobus monkeys, the red-tailed monkey and the grey cheeked mangabey.

UGANDA ~ Giraffes - Murchison Falls National Park ~

... First of two fantastic new African National Parks... Murchison Falls National Park is one of the oldest, the largest and most visited parks... home to the tallest animal in the world, the Rothschild Giraffe... with a population of over 1,550 Giraffes, there is nowhere else that you can see groups of up to 50 animals roaming the Savannah of the park... I did not swap for these postcards... I saw on facebook a request about donating money for a written and stamped postcard: "100% of the money are used for reusable sanitary pads workshops (material) and maternal health books. Many girls got pregnant during lockdown, when the schools closed and cannot attend school anymore. This workshop is helping them to (among others) start a business of selling reusable sanitary pads, which in turn can help many other girls not to miss school due to their period."... Covid19 has a big impact on all our lives... but living in poverty and being a girl in African countries must make it all even much more difficult☹... so, I'm glad to be able to support them a little bit❤... and I hope to get more "rare" African countries through this project... Thanks a lot Alena!【ツ】

Murchison Falls National Park, also called Kabalega Falls National Park or Kabarega National Park, located in northwestern Uganda, established in 1952. It occupies an area of  3,840 square km of rolling grassland east of Lake Albert. The Victoria Nile bisects the park from east to west.

The Rothschild giraffe is only found in Uganda and Kenya. All of the areas where you can see Rothschild's giraffes in the wild are in protected areas.

This giraffe is taller than all other subspecies - males growing to six metres in height and weighing around 850kg (adult female) to 1200kg (adult male) - but the animal does not have horns; instead, it has cartilage structures unattached to its skull called ossicones that are flat at birth and stand within a few days.

Kampala, the capital city of Uganda is spread over ten hills and derives its name from a kiganda expression "kasozi k'empala, "the hill of antelopes". The city  is located on the Northern shores of Lake Victoria at an altitude of 1,310 meters above sea level.
