CANADA ~ Treehouses - The Canada Post Community Foundation ~

... Sweet children's art postcard featuring colorful illustrated Treehouses issued in 2022... they symbolizes our belief that creating spaces – literal, virtual and figurative – where children can play, dream and thrive is of vital importance... and that is the reason the Canada Post Community Foundation exists... these cards were often only available to people who made a donation in person at a post office in Canada... each received postcard is always little gem but knowing it supports a good cause makes it even better☺️... Thanks a lot Glenn! ♥(ˆ⌣ˆԅ)

CANADA ~ Humpback Whale - Ucluelet - Vancouver Island ~

... Wonderful postcard showing the "gentle giants of the ocean"🩵... the largest whale to spot on the island... a Humpback whale "fluking"... when a whale wishes to dive it lifts its tail into the air in a movement called fluking.... they can be seen during summer months anywhere along the coast... whether it's from the deck of a tour boat, the side of your sea kayak, or a seaside trail... seeing one of the most majestic and fascinating creatures in the wild must be an unforgettable experience... the good news is that recent sightings have become more frequent as their populations has been increasing... Ucluelet is an outdoor paradise and ecotourism-focused village... Big Thanks Glenn!(✿ ♥‿♥)  It is always a great pleasure to receive a new whale card for my collection!👍

Artist: Brian Congdon

Ucluelet is situated on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean on Vancouver Island and is positioned around the famous Pacific Rim National Park. The name Ucluelet means "people with a safe place to land" and it originated from the local First Nations people.

The history of Ucluelet starts in 1787 when maritime traders, such as the famous captain of Imperial Eagle, Charles William Barkley, arrive in Barkley sound. Back then, sea otter pelts were in great demand. After some time, around 1870, a fur trader who owned plenty of ships decided to establish a trading post in Ucluelet. With this development, new people moved there and just after 20 years, in 1890, Ucluelet became a town.

CANADA ~ The Plains of Abraham - Quebec - UNESCO ~

... Pretty views with the Château Frontenac a famous landmark located on a cliff within the walls of Old Québec... a historic hotel that dominates the city skyline... this luxurious hotel perched atop Cape Diamond since the late 19th century was designed to convey prestige in keeping with its Old Québec surroundings... historic events have taken place in the building, and famous people have stayed there... the Plains of Abraham (Battlefields Park) in Quebec City is a beloved urban park... a vast, green escape in the heart of the city, providing a peaceful retreat with excellent views of the river and surrounding area... it includes the Joan of Arc Garden, the Citadelle, the Martello Towers, an old jail, nature trails, parks, playing fields and a bandstand for summer concerts... the park welcomes over four million visitors each year and offers year round activities for the whole family... Thanks a lot dear Andrene! (✿◠‿◠)  (Just before I heard about the strike, I sent a few cards to Canada... I hope they will arrive safely🤞)

Photo: J.G. LAVOIE

The Plains of Abraham, located in Quebec City is Canada's first national historic park and often called "Canada's birthplace" due to its connection to the 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham. This battle between the British and French forces led to a major turning point in Canadian history, with the British victory ultimately determining the future of Canada. The Plains of Abraham are part of the larger Battlefields Park, a national historic park created in 1908 to commemorate this battle and preserve the historic site.

Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America. Old Quebec is a historic neighbourhood of Quebec City founded by the French explorer Samuel Champlain in 1608. Champlain explored the St. Lawrence River and continued to the Great Lakes region. He governed New France (the Quebec province) until his death and considered the Father of this area.

Old Quebec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

CANADA ~ Museum for HUMAN RIGHTS - Winnipeg - Manitoba ~

... Nice view of a place regarded as a significant cultural institution that offers a powerful and educational experience... an architecturally beautiful structure in the heart of the city... it features interactive galleries, powerful stories, and exhibits that explore human rights issues both in Canada and around the world... the many personal stories of having lived through some of the worst violations of human rights in history make the museum come alive... it's mission is to enhance the understanding of human rights, to promote respect for others, and to encourage reflection and dialogue... this isn’t just a museum where you learn about the past - it’s a beacon of hope that invites you to imagine a better future... I think, very important and needed given the current state of the world😞... this building is fast-becoming one of Canada’s most iconic symbols... Thanks a lot dear Glenn!(✿◠‿◠)

Photo: Aaron Cohen

The CMHR is designed by world-renowned American architect, Antoine Predock, who took inspiration from the Canadian landscape and it opened its doors to the public in 2014. It is near the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, which has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years.

The building is rich in symbolism and meaning. The towering structure of glass, stone, concrete, and steel is an abstract representation of a white dove embracing a mythic stone mountain. It uses local Tyndall stone and glass wrapped around the northern façade, designed as the dove’s wings. The building is set amid Prairie tall-grass. Meanwhile, the inside of the museum is designed so that visitors complete a journey from dark to light as they ascend the building from its roots to the Tower of Hope.

CANADA ~ SGang Gwaay - Anthony Island - UNESCO ~

... Nice view of  the largest collection of Haida totem poles in their original locations, many celebrated as highly regarded works of art... this is a very remote place at the far southern end of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve...  you can only access it by air or sea... it is one of three abandoned Haida villages which are protected by Parks Canada and the Haida Watchmen program... weathering and decay are taking their natural toll on the village, as the fine details on the poles continue to fade... as far as the Haida people who populate the islands of Haida Gwaii are concerned, however, this is an expected part of life and should not be prevented... the Haida people believe they came from the earth and that they should return to the earth... Thanks Inger!【ツ】

Haida are an Indigenous people who have traditionally occupied the coastal bays and inlets of Haida Gwaii in British Columbia. Archaeological evidence confirms continual habitation on the islands for at least 6,000 to 8,000 years.

Gwaii Haanas (Islands of Beauty) Park reserve and Haida Heritage site is an archipelago of 138 islands that lies 130km off the coast of mainland British Columbia; known simply as Gwaii Haanas, this area is protected as both a National Park reserve and an important Heritage site for the Haida First Nation.

The village of SGang Gwaay on Anthony Island, also known under its colonial name Ninstints, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

CANADA ~ Pitcher Plant - Newfoundland and Labrador ~

... Lovely view of the most unusual of Canada's official flowers... unique compared to all others... every province has a floral symbol that represents something about their province or territory.... the Pitcher plant was first chosen as a symbol of Newfoundland by Queen Victoria, to be engraved on the newly-minted Newfoundland penny... in 1954 the Newfoundland Cabinet designated this interesting plant as the official flower of the province... it was used on the island's coinage until 1938... sent to celebrate "World Postcard Day" on October 1st😊... Thanks a lot Glenn! (✿◠‿◠)

The pitcher plant is commonly found growing in bogs both in Labrador and on the island of Newfoundland.

Carnivorous plants grow in soil that has little nitrogen. All living things must have nitrogen. Carnivorous plants get nitrogen from the insects they eat.

This plant, named for its pitcher-like shaped leaves at the base of its stem, lures in insects and other small animals by using its brightly coloured red veins as a means of attraction.

CANADA ~ Newfoundland Dories ~

... Beautiful artwork by Peter Sobol "from the Edge of the North Atlantic" that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Newfoundland... he is a renowned visual artist in Newfoundland and Labrador, with a creative journey spanning over 30 years... drawing inspiration from the breathtaking natural landscapes that surround him, Peter's work reflects his deep appreciation for the wonders of Newfoundland's wildlife and coastal lifestyle... with lovely stamps and great clear postmark👍...Thanks Glenn! (✿◠‿◠)

Newfoundland dories were used as traditional fishing boats from the 1850s on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. It is usually a lightweight boat with high sides, a flat bottom and sharp bows about 5 to 7 metres long. It is easy to build because of its simple lines. For centuries, the dory has been used both in coastal waters and in the open sea.

CANADA ~ Fortress of Louisbourg - Cape Breton Island - Nova Scotia ~

... Beautiful illustrated vintage postcard inspired by retro travel posters... the Fortress of Louisbourg was an 18thC French fortified town which has been carefully reconstructed... it is the largest reconstruction of its kind in North America, and today is a hugely popular living history museum operated by Parks Canada... many of the buildings are completely furnished and are populated with costumed interpreters who stay pretty much in character... French soldiers march down the streets... it's possible to chat with fishermen, sailors, and servants... they tend sheep... weed their gardens... play the harpsichord or make bread in the stone bakery... visit also the second floor exhibition areas in the King's Bastion where actual archeological artifacts dug up from the site are on display... this is a "must see" destination when visiting Cape Breton... Thanks a lot Andrene! (✿ ♥‿♥) Hopefully all goes well traveling again! Enjoy!😊

Founded in 1713 by French settlers from Placentia, Newfoundland, and named for Louis XIV, it became an important fishing and shipbuilding centre and capital of the French colony of Île Royale.

It was later heavily fortified, becoming one of France's chief strongholds in North America.

An area of 60 km2, including Louisbourg and the ruined fortress across the harbour to the southwest, was declared a national historic park in 1940; restoration of a large part of the area was begun in 1961. About one-fifth of the restoration had been completed by 1980.

Canada ~ Dawson Daily News building - Dawson City ~

... Lovely view of a northern town in the Yukon Territory and one of the most interesting and charming small towns in Canada... when gold was found in a nearby creek in 1896, it started one of the most famous times in history, "the Klondike Gold Rush"... Dawson City became the centre of the Klondike Gold Rush, and prospectors from all over the world arrived with gold fever in their hearts and minds... turning the small, remote settlement into a lively booming town... tourists to Dawson City can discover everything they could ever want to know about the gold rush, by following in the prospectors’ footsteps on the paddle steamers... sifting for gold up at Claim 33... reading some of the literature by Dawson City writers and buying and selling gold in the shops... with great "Heart of the Klondike" postmark👍... Thanks a lot Glenn! (✿◠‿◠)

photo: Parcs Canada/F. Mueller

The Dawson Daily News is located in the historic district of Dawson. It is an example of a warehouse structure of the Gold Rush period from 1897-1906. The rectangular, gable roofed timber structure has an asymmetrical, Boomtown fronted, street elevation with ‘Dawson Daily News’ painted across it in large letters. Its good functional design is evidenced in its successful adaptation into a publishing, printing and jobbing business.

The famous Klondike gold rush broke out in 1898 right here - at the Bonanza Creek gold deposit, very close to present-day Dawson City. Dawson, a trading post in a mud flat at the confluence of the Klondike and  Yukon Rivers, mushroomed in a single season to a sprawling boom town, made up of log and frame buildings and tents. The town was named after Dr. George Mercer Dawson, a Canadian government geologist.

Dawson Historical Complex protects over 17 buildings that are associated with the story of the Klondike Gold Rush. The site reflects the social, economic and political features that shaped the Yukon region over the last century.
