UK ~ St Martin's Church - Canterbury - UNESCO ~

... Pretty church view from the air... postcard nr 3 of Canterbury's most important monuments... this modest St Martin's Church is the cathedral's mother church and the oldest continuously used panish church in the English Speaking World... the church itself has many old Roman bricks and pieces of walls that were reused... at the very center of the church, the remains of a Roman tomb were built right into the structure... there is a large cemetery surrounding the church... a very important early historical site and a place of spiritual significance... a peaceful, tranquil and atmospheric unique building... with once more wonderful Lord of the Rings stamps used👍... Thanks so much Paul!ヽ(•‿•)ノ

Drone project: © Michael Butler

St Martin's was Queen Bertha of Kent's private chapel. She was a Christian princess from a place called Francia. She came to England with her chaplain, Bishop Liudhard. Queen Bertha's husband, Æthelberht of Kent, was not Christian. But he let her practice her faith. He helped her fix up an old Roman-British building around 580 AD to use as a church.

When Augustine arrived in 597 AD, he used St Martin's as his main base for his mission. He even made it bigger. Later, when Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey were built, St Martin's became less famous.

St Martins is part of the trio which make up the World Heritage site in Canterbury they all  are directly and tangibly associated with the history of the introduction of Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

UK ~ Levant Mine and Beam Engine - Cornwall - UNESCO ~

...Great view of an example of the iconic and famous clifftop mines along the north coast of Cornwall... located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean,  the "Tin Coast" surrounded by spectacular sea views... its main attraction is that it has the world's oldest Cornish steam winding engine still working in its original location and the last such engine still in steam in Cornwall... expert volunteer drivers operate the engine and there are daily guided tours of the rest of this fascinating site... it got the nickname "mine under the sea", because tunnels were driven up to 2.5 km from the cliffs under the sea... there is also a visitor centre and a short underground tour... love the wonderful Lord of the Rings stamps💙...Thanks a lot Paul!! (✿◠‿◠)

© Helen Dixon
The property is on the site of the former Levant Mine, established in 1820 and closed in 1930, where tin and copper ores were raised. The mine reached a depth of about 600 metres. The surviving beam engine was built c. 1840 by Harvey's of Hayle.

Although most of the plant was sold for scrap the winding engine was purchased and preserved by the Cornish Engine Preservation Society. In 1984 a group of volunteers (affectionately christened the 'Greasy Gang') started a restoration project which led to the engine steaming again in 1993.

Since 2006, the area has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.

UNITED KINGDOM ~ Lindisfarne Priory - Holy Island - Northumberland ~

.. Great postcard designed from a stamp... Lindisfarne Priory is one of the most spectacular sights on the island... and has the most incredible history... from the Monks who lived here to the Viking invasions... although the richly decorated priory church is in ruins, the rooms of the Priory can still easily be identified and it's so impressive how much of the building stands today... the rainbow arch is one of the most incredible features and amazingly has survived despite the tower above it collapsing over 200 years ago... the island also offers abundant wildlife and wonderful coastal views... Lindisfarne is only reachable across a causeway at low tide, which makes a visit even more special... with wonderful matching stamps💙 featuring the priory and a Viking artefact stamp celebrating the history and legacy of Viking culture in Britain... Thanks a lot Josep&Assumpta! ♥(ˆ⌣ˆԅ)

© AJM681/AlarmyStock Photo

Lindisfarne  also known as Holy Island was one of the most important centres of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England for more than a century.  Irish monks settled here in AD 635 and the monastery became the centre of a major saint’s cult celebrating its bishop, Cuthbert. Then it was abandoned, after the infamous Viking raid of AD 793.

The ruins you see today are from the early 12th century, when Norman monks from Durham Cathedral founded a new community here. The masterpiece now known as the Lindisfarne Gospels an illuminated manuscript gospel book was created here in the early 8th century.

After the Norman Conquest in 1066, monks from Durham added the name “Holy Island” when they looked back over the stories of Lindisfarne.

UK ~ Bath - Somerset - UNESCO ~

... Wonderful view of the Great Bath, the highlight of the entire bath complex... the house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing located in the heart of the gorgeous ancient city of Bath... the city was founded upon natural hot springs with the steaming water playing a key role throughout its history...  1,170,000 litres of steaming spring water reaching 46 °C still fill the bathing site every single day... the Romans believed that this was the mystical work of the Gods... but the water source, which comes from the King’s Spring, fell as rain water around 10,000 BC... it’s quite astonishing that after 2,000 years, these Roman Baths remain one of the top tourist attractions in England... and one of the finest historic sites in Northern Europe... Thanks a lot Agnieszka! (✿◠‿◠)

The Romans founded the thermal spa city of Bath in AD 60-70 and, over the following 300 years, continued to construct a temple and bathing complex. The Roman Baths were named after the Goddess Minerva Sulis, and Bath was known in Latin as Aquae Sulis. The Roman Baths at Bath continued to be used by the Romans until their withdrawal from Britain in the early 5th-century.

The baths then fell into disrepair and were ultimately lost to flooding and silting over. It wasn’t until the Victorians explored the site in the late 19C and discovered the hidden Roman Baths that they began excavating. The Victorians continued erecting the stunning buildings surrounding the sacred thermal spa, and today all the architecture on street level around the bathing complex dates from the 19th-century. The grand opening of the Baths was in 1897.

Bath became a UNESCO WHS site in 1987 and is also one of eleven Great Spa Towns of Europe recognised by UNESCO  in 2021.

UK ~ Blaenavon Industrial Landscape - Wales - UNESCO ~

... Great postcard with an eye catching design... using a strong illustrative style... a testament to the human endeavour of miners and ironworkers of the past... the working people who drove the industrial revolution... Blaenavon WHS site is a mix of industrial landscape and natural beauty... home to one of the best preserved 18thC ironworks in Europe... complete with furnaces, cast houses, a magnificent water balance tower, cupola furnace and ironworkers cottages... including a coal mine, churches, chapels, a school and a workmen’s hall... but the main attraction is the Big Pit with the associated National Coal Museum, which was a working coal mine from the mid-19th to the late 20thC... nowadays, there are interesting underground tours guided by former miners... the complex includes several exhibitions about the mines and the often miserable lives of the miners... all set in a landscape that is also favoured by walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers... Thanks a lot Paul! ❀◕ ‿ ◕❀

Blaenavon is a small, industrial mining town nestled among the Brecon Beacons mountains of South Wales. The hills to the west of the town contain the source of the Afon Lwyd, the main river running through the county borough of Torfaen, South Wales’s easternmost valley.

The name Blaenavon literally means ‘front of the river’ or, loosely, ‘river's source’.

The two key sites of Blaenavon Industrial Landscape (33 km²) are the Blaenavon Ironworks, managed by Cadw, and Big Pit, managed by Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales.

In 2000, UNESCO inscribed the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape as a World Heritage Site.

UK ~ Paddington Bear - Paddington Station - London ~

... Probably the sweetest and most adorable bear postcard ever❤️😊❤️... Paddington bear sitting on his battered, brown suitcase with his old hat, blue duffel coat and only a jar of marmalade in Paddington Station... it was here where this polite bear first arrived from deepest, darkest Peru and a very important place for him... because at this station he was found by Mr. and Mrs. Brown when he arrived in London and of course it is also the reason he got his name... and what makes this cute postcard even more special for me??? knowing that it was bought at Paddington Station itself... (Paddington Station is one of London's oldest stations serving the western areas of the country)... besides being a train station it's now a favorite tourist stop... to commemorate this there is a life-sized bronze statue of Paddington here... Thanks so much B. Hester for this wonderful surprise! ♥(ˆ⌣ˆԅ) ( hope my postcard will arrive safely because your handwriting was not so clear😉)

"The bear was sitting on some kind of suitcase and around its neck was a label which read:
Please look after this bear. Thank You."

Paddingtin bear is a creation of British author Michael Bond in the childrens book ‘A Bear called Paddington’ which was first published in 1958. He has been featured in more than twenty books written by the author, and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum and other artists.

"Michael Bond  bought a small toy bear on Christmas Eve 1956. I saw it left on a shelf in a London store and felt sorry for it. I took it home as a present for my wife Brenda and named it Paddington as we were living near Paddington Station at the time. I wrote some stories about the bear, more for fun than with the idea of having them published. After ten days I found that I had a book on my hands. It wasn’t written specifically for children, but I think I put into it the kind things I liked reading about when I was young."

The classic tales of Paddington Bear have captured the imagination of the young and young at heart across the globe, selling more than 30 million books worldwide.

UK ~ Harlech's castle - Gwynedd - Wales - UNESCO ~

... Amazing view from the beach of the mighty castle that dominates the Harlech skyline... perched on the edge of the cliff with spectacular views both the Irish Sea and Snowdonia mountain range.... the mountainous scenery is bound to be one of the main reasons Edward I decided to build another of his impressive fortresses here over 700 years ago, offering some incredible views out to the surrounding hills and valleys... structurally complete and an excellent example of an almost complete gatehouse and amazing battlement walk... it offers a good insight into what life might have been like inside the castle years ago... one of the best preserved castles in Wales despite some historical attempts to destroy it... with lovely National Parks stamps👍... Thanks a lot Barry!! (✿◠‿◠) I'm glad to hear from you after such a long time... hope you achieve your goal to complete walking the whole path💪... must be a great outdoor adventure!

Harlech Castle is a 13thC castle, constructed on the orders of England’s King Edward I. It was built as part of a defensive ring of castles designed to help strengthen English control over Wales.

The castle is a good example of a concentric castle. It had an outer and inner wall for extra protection, and was also almost symmetrical in shape. It is protected by 4 huge round towers, as well as a strong gatehouse, or entrance. The castle walls are 12 metres high and several metres thick in places.

Harlech Castle played an important role during the Wars of the Roses in the 15thC. During the Wars of the Roses, the castle came under siege in 1461, and withstood for seven years. Supplies came by water from Ireland. This is the longest siege in British history and is probably the origin of the song Men of Harlech.

Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd became a UNESCO WHS site in 1986.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland since the 15thC and it is located in central eastern Scotland, near the Firth of Forth (the estuary of several Scottish rivers), close to the North Sea.

It has two distinct areas: the Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress; and the neoclassical New Town, whose development from the 18thC onwards had a far-reaching influence on European urban planning. The harmonious juxtaposition of these two contrasting historic areas, each with many important buildings, is what gives the city its unique character.

UK ~ Saltaire - UNESCO ~

... Nice view of Roberts Park from an original oil painting by a local artist David Starley...  his characteristic work features oil paint thickly applied with a knife to produce a three-dimensional, almost sculpted, image... view of a beautiful Victorian park on the side of the river Aire ideal for a walk or picnic...Thanks a lot dear Andrene for still sending me a postcard even though it wasn't such a pleasant visit!! (>‿♥)
Roberts Park is a 14 acres (5.7 ha) public urban park in Baildon, West Yorkshire.

Saltaire Village  is named after Sir Titus Salt who built a textile mill, known as Salts Mill and this village on the River Aire. Designed by architects, Lockwood and Mawson, Salts Mill was opened on Sir Titus Salt's 50th birthday, 20 September 1853. Salt moved his entire business from Bradford to this site partly to provide better arrangements for his workers and partly to site his large textile mill by a canal and a railway.

Salt's philanthropic project is usually seen as an example of paternalism. Salt built neat stone houses for his workers, wash-houses with running water, bath-houses, a hospital, as well as an Institute for recreation and education, with a library, a reading room, a concert hall, billiard room, science laboratory and gymnasium. The village also provided a school for the children of the workers, almshouses, allotments, a park and a boathouse.

In December 2001, Saltaire was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
