GHANA ~ Cape Coast Castle - UNESCO ~

... View of an impressive building with a grim history and a stark reminder of a horrific past... Cape Coast Castle is the largest of the buildings which contains the legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade... somewhere around 12 millions of enslaved Africans from regions near and far, were taken to these castles to be sold to slave ships... today, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year... but the Castle is also a place where tourists learn about Ghana's history... not only about the history of the slave trade but also the history of the country within which the slave trade occurred... Cape Coast Castle was a way station in history's largest, and darkest, forced human migration... Thanks a lot Karolyn! (✿◠‿◠)

Cape Coast Castle is situated in the small town with the same name on the central coastline of Ghana. Originally built by Sweden in the 1650s, Cape Coast Castle shifted into Danish, Dutch, and then English possession by the 1660s. In the castle's early decades, trade revolved around gold, wood, and textiles before English merchants began to seek captive Africans in large numbers. The Brits formally declared the slave trade illegal in 1807, though Cape Coast Castle remained their local headquarters on the Gold Coast until 1877.

The Forts and Castles of Ghana, as inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979, consist of three castles, 15 forts in a relatively good condition, 10 forts in ruins and seven sites with traces of former fortifications.

GHANA ~ Asante Traditional Buildings - UNESCO ~

... First of two lovely new African UNESCO sites... the Asante Traditional Buildings are a collection of traditionally built buildings from the time of the Ashanti Empire in the area near Kumasi, the empire’s former capital... once one of the most powerful states on the African continent, today survives only in the form of a handful of shrine complexes... decorated with richly symbolic bas reliefs, with spiral and arabesque forms and representations of animals, birds and plants... since the dwellings are made of earth, wood and straw, they are vulnerable to the onslaught of time and weather... Thanks Karolyn! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Asante Kingdom had its golden age in the 18th century, fell during the British occupation of the area from 1806 to 1901, and most Asante buildings of the period were destroyed during the area. Among other buildings, the royal mausoleum was destroyed by Baden-Powell in 1895.

The Asante Traditional Buildings were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.

GHANA ~ Larabanga Mosque ~

... Another great card coming from Africa on behalf of Josep&Assumpta❤️... anyone can receive or send postcards from Ghana while providing support to the activities of The Prince & Princess Academy Project Team... a School Building Project: https://princeandprincessacadmy.com/... this postcard is showing one of the oldest mosques in West Africa and the oldest in Ghana... also one of the country’s most revered religious sites... built with mud and reeds... there are only eight mosques in the country built in this manner and has long been a pilgrimage site for Ghana’s Muslim population... these architectural styles, which have survived for centuries are a popular destination for tourists... Thanks a million!! (✿ ♥‿♥)

Larabanga is situated in the Northern Region of the country and close to the Mole National Park.

Believed to have been built by Moorish traders during the time of the trans-Saharan trade in the 13thC. The Mosque has two tall towers in a pyramid shape, one for the mihrab which faces towards Mecca, forming the facade on the east, and the other as a minaret in the northeast corner. These are buttressed by twelve bulbous shaped structures, which are fitted with timber elements. The Mosque has four entrances, one each for the village chief, men, women, and the muezzin, who leads the azan or prayer call.

This so-called God-built mosque in the Sudanese architectural style also houses a holy Quran (Koran) which also is believed to descend from heaven.

GHANA ~ Kakum National Park ~

... Fantastic African National Park to add to my collection♥...  when visiting Cape Coast, one of the major tourist attractions is Kakum National Park and doing the Canopy Walkway... a truly unforgettable experience... this is one of only two canopy walkways in all of Africa... this walkway connects at 40m height seven tree tops with a bridge that is 350 meters long made from cables, ropes and aluminum ladders... the uniqueness of this park lies in the fact that it was established at the initiative of the local people and not by the State Department of wildlife who are responsible for wildlife preservation in Ghana... Thanks a million Evgenia!!【ツ】
Designed by Nanasei

Kakum National Park, located in the coastal environs of the Central Region of Ghana, covers an area of 375 square kilometres (145 sq mi). Established in 1931 as a reserve,  and was upgraded to national park status in 1992. The area is covered with tropical rainforest.
