The Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park was founded in 1993. This National Park is the first cross-border National Park in Austria with the Fertö-Hanság Nemzeti Park in Hungary. On the Austrian side, the National Park covers 7 local authority areas with 9,674 ha in size.
The park’s habitats are shaped by lake Neusiedl’s reed beds, small saltwater ponds which periodically dry out, small sand dunes, hay meadows, vineyards and livestock grazing areas. The land is owned by about 1200 local landowners with whom the National Park has long-term leases.
Besides breeding birds, tens of thousands which use it as a stopover site can be observed there during spring or autumn migration, around 300 bird species were recorded in this relatively small area out of which 170 nest locally.
Together with the adjacent Hungarian Fertő-Hanság National Park it forms the Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
