.... Lovely view of an ancient Budhist temple located in the shadow of a mighty rock boulder... the temple seems to be located in a cave underneath it and a tiled roof was built over it... Hindagala temple is very important place in Sri Lankan history since the temple is related to many of ancient legends... the temple was inhabited by Buddhist monks for centuries... later with the addition of Buddha statues an Hindad paintings, it had become a leading Image house in the area... the viharaya is famous for its legendary wall paintings... Thanks a lot Ravindra! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hindagala Raja Maha Viharaya has a history dating back to pre-Christian era, probably to 3rd century B.C. when Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. The verandah with timber pillars, the roof and some paintings were done during the Kandyan era (14th century A.D.).
The two rock inscriptions at the site are datable to the 7th century A.D. The older inscription is datable to the 6th century A.D.
