Located at the mouth of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers in South West part of Bangladesh on the Bay of Bengal. It is adjacent to the border of India’s Sundarbans World Heritage site.
The Sunderbans is named after the Sundari trees which are found in bulk in this area.
The park was established as a national park in 1984 as earlier it was created as wildlife sanctuary in 1977, designated as the core area of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve.
When the Indian Sundarbans were inscribed in 1987 it was suggested that the site be increased to include the (larger) Bangladesh Sundarbans. When Bangladesh got its area inscribed in 1997, the Sundarbans as a whole encompasses 10.000km² of which 60 percent is in Bangladesh.
