... Lovely view of the arched gate... the most impressive reminder of Regensburg's Roman heritage... giant blocks of stone were used to construct this gate in the wall of the Roman military camp... no cement was used, the stones were just placed on top of each other and the weight has kept the tower together for centuries... Porta Praetoria was absorbed into later buildings and it wasn’t until 1885 that its great age was identified... it is the largest remaining Roman monument in Bavaria....and one of the two surviving Roman gates north of the Alps... with as always a nice special postmark... Thans a lot Dustin!❀◕ ‿ ◕❀
Porta Praetoria used to be the northern gate of a Roman military camp, called Castra Regina, to defend against Germans dating from 179 AD.
This gate is in a vital strategic position facing the point where the River Regen flows in to the Danube. Such gates in the fortresses were built in the direction of the enemy.
