GERMANY ~ Hambach Castle - Neustadt ~

... Fantastic aerial view of a well-fortified castle...one of the most important landmarks in German history... the birthplace of modern-day Germany... high above the city at the slopes of the Palatinate forest, visitors have a spectacular view over the Rhine valley and the surrounding vineyards... today, this castle is a partially restored ruin, whose walls and towers are reminders of almost 1,000 years of history.... it is now a museum and convention center... and houses an exhibit that chronicles the May 27, 1832, event known as the "Hambach Festival", when nearly 30,000 people from Germany, France and Poland gathered at the castle to demand democracy, freedom and a united Europe... it got the European Heritage label since 2014 for playing major roles in European unification... with stamp about the German Presidency of the European Union and special First Day Postmark... Thanks Dustin! (✿◠‿◠)

Hambach Castle is located on the mountain Schlossberg (literally translated "Castle mountain") in the eastern outskirts of the Palatine Forest. The castle dates back to the Middle Ages but became famous in the 19thC.

The estate ruled both as a protection castle and as a robber baron castle over the trade roads and the northern route of the Anterior Palatinate section of the Way of St. James.
