... Beautiful view of a church perched on top of mount Monte... it has been a popular and important place of pilgrimage since its completion in 1811 even though there are no visions or saints associated with this place... the Baroque style sanctuary consists of several chapels housing famous statues, fountains, sculptures and formal gardens... a highlight of visiting the refuge is the Stairway... a staircase of dark granite covered in bright white plaster known as "The Sacred Way" that climbs 116 meters high... there are about 580 steps which zig-zag to the top... surrounded by lush woodland....the truly devoted will climb the stairs on their knees... but the sanctuary can also be reached by funicular or by car... the vista from the top of the hill alone is worth the climb with views out over Braga and beyond... one of the oldest Christian cities in the world and known as the "Portuegese Vaticano"... Thanks João! (✿◠‿◠)
Bom Jesus do Monte is a sanctuary in Tenões, outside the city of Braga, in northern Portugal.
Its name means Good Jesus of the Mount. There have been several churches on this hilltop site over the centuries, but the current church was built between 1784 and 1834. It was commissioned by archbishop Gaspar de Bragança and designed by Carlos Amarante. It is one of the earliest examples of neoclassical design in Portugal.
The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.
