HONDURAS ~ Cayos Cochinos Marine National Park ~

... Today a long overdue post update... first of all I felt (and still feel) really down due to the Coronavirus crisis... the "lock down" had such a big impact on daily life😢... not seeing family and staying at home most of the time... a series of restrictions were gradually lifted since May... slowly back to "normal" or probably the "new normal"... didn't sent any postcards for weeks now... all Bpost events are cancelled... than I made a bad fall... hurt my shoulder and sprained my wrist...😟so couldn't work on my computer...
... but here is a stunning new National Park postcard👍... when people talk about the Cayos they usually refer to the Cayo Menor and Cayo Grande... both of these Cayos are declared biological marine reserve, thanks to the unique eco-environment... it has a very rich flora and marine life  and covers an area of almost five hundred square kilometers... even today, getting to Cayo Menor is only permitted for scientists and people that work for the Honduras Coral Reef Fund... Cayo Grande is the island where tourists can go, but it can be reached only by boat... there is also an entrance fee charged for those that wish to visit Cayo Grande... patrol rangers constantly inspect the area to ensure that regulations are followed and to protect these unique islands from damage... Also known as the Hog Cays, Cayos Cochinos is a small archipelago lying just off the coast of La Ceiba. Consisting of two small islands and 13 tiny sand cays.

The Cayos Cochinos Islands were declared a National Marine Monument and are one of the most important parts of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Its environment and waters have been protected as an ecological marine reserve since 1994.
