The Grand Palace complex is situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and is surrounded by walls more than a mile long and has an enclosed complex with an area of 218,400 square meters.
The Grand Palace was built in 1782 and is divided into four main courts, separated by numerous walls and gates: the Outer Court, the Middle Court, the Inner Court and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
These buildings served as residence to Thai kings and their families for 150 years and used to house government departments under direct control of the King. Although at present it is no longer home to the Thai royal family, the Grand Palace is still used for many ceremonial occasions.
