... Great evening view of the cathedal and church highlighted as the "twin landmarks" of Erfurt... positioned side-by-side on the picturesque Domberg hill, they are frequently cited as a unique architectural ensemble in Europe.... the cathedral is the grander, more imposing of the two churches... the St. Severus Church is described as a "peaceful alternative" to the busier cathedral... reaching the churches requires climbing a grand staircase of some 70 steps from the Domplatz... they both forming a picture-perfect, historically rich backdrop to this well-preserved medieval city, often called a hidden gem... with nice special stamp cancellation... this year Jim Knopf (Jim Button), the beloved German children's book character created by Michael Ende, celebrates his 65th birthday... Thanks Dustin!【ツ】
Erfurt is the capital city and largest city of the German state of Thuringia and lies in the wide valley of the River Gera. First mentioned in 742, it was a vital medieval trading city on the Via Regia, known as "Thuringian Rome" due to its many churches. The young Martin Luther studied at the university and lived as a monk in the Augustinian Monastery (now a museum).
