... Lovely Trier view nr 2... the magnificent St Matthias Abbey is thought to be Germany’s oldest Christian church... one of the most significant structures in Trier and holds countless art treasures... a renowned place of pilgrimage because it contains the tomb of of one of the 12 Apostles, Saint Matthias, (the Apostle who replaced Judas) after whom the abbey is named... the only apostle’s grave to have been found north of the Alps... this makes it an important pilgrimage destination since the middle ages... with another great first day 🌟Weihnachten🌟 postmark... St Matthias Abbey is a Benedictine monastery, a Romanesque basilica located toward the south end of the city.
The present church was built in 1127. Much of the building of St Matthias Abbey was reconstructed in the 19thC, having been subject to several invasions and occupation as a private home.
