GERMANY ~ Porta Nigra - Trier - UNESCO ~

... Imposing view of the city's landmark, the Porta Nigra... one of four entrance gates to Trier during Roman times... an enduring symbol of Trier’s ancient Roman beginnings... located on a main road in the historic center... considered the most powerful and best-preserved city gate from Roman legacy worldwide thanks to its solid construction... from its upper floor it provides very nice views of the city...  a must see historcal site... with great "Diversity in Germany" stamp (the stamp design includes not only a six-color rainbow, but also the most common sign for transgender) and lovely special heart shaped💙 first day postmark... Thanks a lot Dustin!【ツ】

The Romans built the Porta Nigra (latin for Black Gate) in the 2nd century AD using approximately 7200 huge sandstone blocks that weighed up to 6 tons and were held together by iron clamps.

The Porta Nigra has 2 mighty towers, which enclose a central building with double gateways. With a width of 36 meters and an enormous depth of 26 meters, the gigantic city gate has a floor area of almost 1000 square meters.
