... Nice view of the Imperial Palace... an important place of European history ... originally built under the reign of Charlemagne... the current building is a reconstruction on the historical site located here since 1978... in front of it, the foundation walls of Charlemagne’s palace can be seen... this museum not only provides the visitor with
a fascinating historical overview, but also charts Paderborn’s place in world history... it shows the ruined walls, murals and artifacts of the original palace... also unique finds from Paderborn and Westphalia from the 6thC to 12thC... with great special postmark... Thanks Dustin!ヽ(ヅ)ノ
Paderborn was founded as a bishopric by Charlemagne in 795, although its official history began in 777 when Charlemagne built a castle near the Pader springs. This Ottonian-Salic imperial palace to the north of the cathedral was built in the Romanesque period around 759.
In 799 Pope Leo III fled his enemies in Rome and reached Paderborn, where he met Charlemagne, and stayed there for three months. It was during this time that it was decided that Charlemagne would be crowned emperor. Charlemagne reinstated Leo in Rome in 800 and was crowned as Holy Roman Emperor by Leo in return.
