ITALY ~ Catania - Sicily - UNESCO ~

... Plenty of nice views of a renowned port and Sicily’s second largest metropolitan city... nestled between the blue Ionian Sea at the foot of the volcano Etna... the city already existed during the Medieval Age, but was partly rebuilt after a catastrophic earthquake in 1693... the reaction to this catastrophe was amazing...in the 18thC the entire old part of town was rebuilt in Baroque style with large, wide-open squares, terraces, domes, balconies and staircases... the most remarkable aspect, however, was the building material used: lava... Catania is essentially a “grey” city and unique in the world for this... which are its major attractions for tourists...  it is also home to the oldest university in Sicily... Thanks Mario!【ツ】postcard was sent from Sicily and with Catania postmark👍

Catania It is the capital of the Sicilian province of Catania and is the second largest city in Sicily, after Palermo and among the ten largest cities in Italy.

The city was founded by the Greeks. However, throughout history Catania has undergone several dominations which include that of the Romans. The Renaissance times were particularly flourishing here and Catania developed a rich culture and arts. Today is the industrial, logistical, and commercial center of Sicily.

The Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto are listed as a UNESCO WHS site in 2002. The 8 places that are included as 'Val di Noto' are Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli.
