Casentinesi Forests National Park was established in 1993 and covers 36,426ha placed between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna and stretches from Mount Falterona to the Mandrioli pass.
The park has the most important population of the Apennine wolf, as well as the exceptional presence of five species of ungulates (mammals with hooves): wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer, common deer, and mouflon (mountain sheep).
The Italian Ancient Beech forests protected by UNESCO fall within the context of the transnational environmental site of the "Primeval forests of the Carpathian beech and other parts of Europe".
