Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (officially known as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram) is located in the historic centre of Bangkok, within the grounds of the Grand Palace. The 94.5-hectare grounds encompass more than 100 buildings that represent 200 years of royal history and architectural experimentation.
The site houses the sacred Phra Kaew Morakot (Emerald Buddha) statue, which was carved from a single block of jade. Raised high up on a giant platform, the much-revered Emerald Buddha statue sits in a classic meditation pose and dates back to the 15th century. According to legend, the statue originated in India, where it was prophesied that it would bring prosperity to any country in which it resides.
