Burkina Faso is a landlocked nation in West Africa. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Formerly known as the Upper Volta, is one of the most ethnically diverse countries on Earth. 69 languages are spoken here and there is no ethnic group that holds an absolute majority.
Bobo-Dioulasso is the second largest city in the country, after Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital. The city as well as the mosque has two names that come from the two ethnic groups, Bobo and Dioula.
The mosque was built in the late 19th century in typical Sudano -Sahelian style architecture. The legend says that it was built as a result of a political deal between a local king and Islamic religious leader. Materials used for building are solely natural: mud and wood. Plenty of horizontal sticks projecting from the building have two roles: they support the structure and are used as scaffold during the renovation, which is supposed to happen every year.
