The Baroque masterpiece of Schloss Mirabell Palace was initially built as "Schloß Altenau" under the reign of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in 1606. It was a present for his concubine Salome Alt. Extensively damaged by fire in 1818, the palace was rebuilt in Neo-classicist style.
The geometrically arranged gardens were first laid out in 1687 and have since evolved. The statues date from the early 1700s and have a mythological theme. The gardens were opened to the public by Emperor Franz Josef in the middle of the 1800s.
Mirabell is a woman’s name from Italy, a compilation of two words: mirabile "admirable" and bella "beautiful".
The palace with its gardens is part of the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg UNESCO WHS site.
