The Pre-Columbian city now known as Copan is located in western Honduras, near to the Guatemalan border. It was the capital city of a major Classic period kingdom from the 5th to 9th centuries AD.The site was abandoned shortly after 900.
Even though Copan was well known since the early 19thC, it wasn’t until 1975 that excavations began and still ongoing to uncover the mysteries behind the history of this lost city.
The ruins were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1980.
