GREECE ~ Acropolis of Lindos - Rhodes - UNESCO ~

... Beautiful view of the most important tourist attractions on the island of Rhodes, the ancient city of Lindos.... above the modern town rises the acropolis of Lindos... a steep footpath climbs the 116m high rock to reach the beautifully preserved Acropolis... from the acropolis you have on one side the magical views of the surrounding harbours and coastline...on the other side is the bay of St. Paul, where according to tradition, the Apostle Paul came ashore in the year 57 AC... The Acropolis of Lindos is a citadel or fortress that according to history was designed to defend and protect a place against external attacks. These citadels are constructed on hills since the view is better and easier to see if someone or a group is fast approaching. The ancient citadel, was exploited not only by the ancient Greeks but also by the Romans, the Byzantines, St. John’s Knights and finally by the Turks.

The walls surrounding the Acropolis are the remnants of the Knights Headquarters built here in the 14thC. Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman influences can be observed in the various structures that survive, but the most notable ones are the Hellenistic Stoa (200 BC) and the Doric-style Temple of Athena of Lindos (around 300 BC).

CANADA ~ Fulford Village - Salt Spring Island - B.C. ~

... Canadian beauty nr2... a pretty autumn scenery... the islands oldest tiny but picturesque church... a beautiful landmark that is visible from the ferry when arriving at Fulford Harbor... the most photographed church on Salt Spring Island... I really love the reflection in the water...  with great choice of stamps (as alwaysツ) Thanks a lot Glenn!! (✿ ♥‿♥)

St. Paul's church was founded in 1878 by Father Donckele, the first Roman Catholic missionary to the Gulf islands. Erected between 1880 and 1885 by members of the community, the windows, door and bell were acquired from father Rondeault’s “Butter Church” in Cowichan Bay. The materials were brought in Indian canoes from Cowichan Bay to Burgoyne Bay, then by ox-drawn stoneboat to this site. The church was formally dedicated on May 10, 1885, by Bishop J. B. Brondel. Coloured stonework was added about 1973.

Fulford Village is located at the southern end of the island and was named after Captain John Fulford of the HMS Ganges, and served between 1858 and 1860.

It is home to the native artefact's museum (which is housed in a log building).

CANADA ~ Flowerpot Island - Tobermory - Fathom Five National Marine Park ~

... Great postcard nr2 shows how it actually looks for "real" in the Park... one of the country's most fascinating and impressive natural attractions...  this area is only accessible by boat... a great scuba diving spot because of the many shipwrecks... but you can also enjoy looking at them without having to dive if you ride glass bottom boats...

Fathom Five Marine national park covers an area of 130 square kilometers of surface water surrounding 20 islands on the northern and eastern sectors of the Bruce Peninsula. The Parks was established in 1987 and was the first National Marine Park in the country.

Flowerpot Island is a 2 km² island  located in Tobermory  and  home to stunted white cedars, mixed-woodland and rare ferns and orchids.

Rhodes is a Greek island situated in the south-eastern Aegean Sea, on the borders between two worlds, east and west. Rhodes Town, founded in 408 BC, lies on the northern tip of the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese.

The castle was built within the Old Town walls at the beginning of the 13th century AD by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, it consists of over 150 rooms (only a few are open to the public) and a conference room that often hosted summits for the European and world leaders. Today it attracts visitors from around the world as it houses the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.

... Beautiful view of one of the rarest breeding birds in Japan... and most endangered species in the owl family... it decreases in number mainly due to habitat loss... Blakistin's Fish-owls are losing the wood and the fish they need... Shiretoko National park is considered to be the last pristine wilderness remaining in the country...

Shiretoko National Park was established in 1964 and is located on the northeast peninsula of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. One of the most remote regions in all of Japan, much of the peninsula is only accessible on foot or by boat. The word "Shiretoko" comes from an Ainu word "sir etok". It means "end of the Earth"

The salmon and trout that breed in the sea off Shiretoko are an important food resource supporting the terrestrial ecosystem with rare birds such as Blakiston's fish owl, Steller's sea eagle and the white-tailed sea eagle, as well as brown bears.

The Blakiston’s fish owl is a large eagle owl, with a wingspan that can reach up to two metres long. They can be find in Siberia, northeast China and the island of Hokkaido in Japan.This owl feeds primarily on fish, even larger ones. It also catches crustaceans, amphibians and birds such as grouses, and sometimes bats in flight.

 In 2005, Shiretoko was added to the list of world heritage sites for the irreplaceable value of the peninsula's ecosystem and biodiversity.

Guishan, literally means Turtle Island also known as Kueishan Island,  is situated in the most northern water in Yilan County in the Pacific Ocean. The island  got its name because its shape resembles a turtle.

The island is 3.3 kilometers wide from east to west and 1.7 kilometers long, coming to a total area of 2.85 kilometers squared, with a total coastline of approximately 10 kilometers.

Even with its small size, there are steep cliffs, active hot springs, hills and peaks, erosion caves, lakes, cold springs, rare cliff vegetation and a rich ocean ecology.

INDONESIA ~Toraja Tomb of Sulawesi-UNESCO Tentative List~

... Great postcard showing rare ancient rites and unique culture... a fascinating place... Thanks a lot Hime for this lovely surprise in my mailbox^^!!

The Toraja are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi (one of the largest islands in Indonesia). People in Toraja believe in life after death. It is well known as the Land of Heavenly Kings. They have a unique funeral ceremony for helping the Spirit goes to heaven easily. After the ceremony, the dead body is put inside the rocky mountain. They believe that’ll make them closer to heaven.

At Lemo village, probably the most impressive burial area these graves are built into the cliff, and wooden statues of the dead are displayed in balconies alongside. This cliff grave site has a large number of Tau Tau statues; Tau Tau is a wooden carving made to represent the dead. The two structures on the right are used to carry coffins.

Anguilla is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. It is a tiny island set in warm waters of the Leeward Islands, east of Puerto Rico and just north of St. Martin.



Little Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Anguilla and one of the smallest. It is protected by a cove of high cliffs.

Photo Christian Mondin Margarita is a Venezuelan island (about 25 miles from the mainland) in the Caribbean Sea and is part of Nueva Esparta state. It's comprised of two islands connected in the middle by the mangrove-filled lagoon of La Restinga National Park.

Taguantar is a beach in Juan Griego a city on the northern side of the island and is the most northern port in Venezuela. It is one of the most important cities in Margarita and located right next to the sea and has a beautiful beach.

PHILIPPINES ~Pangasinan-Hundred Islands National Park ~

"Alaminos" the home of hundred islands... I can just imagine how idyllic this place must be, a fantastic place to stay and relax...

The national park covers a land area of 1.884 hectares with the islands (24 at high tide and 123 at lowtide) scattered along Lingayen Gulf. Diving, snorkling, island hopping, swimming and fishing are some of the popular activities in this natural park.

...Finally after more than a week without mail I received a lovely special shaped card with great views of the island Sicily today... I really missed not getting postcards on a regulary base... I think it must be the volcanic eruption of the Eyjafjallajokul (tough name by the way!:-)) that delayed all the mail...
