GERMANY ~ Roman Amphitheater - Trier - UNESCO ~

... Starting the year as it ended, with a nice view of Trier... a little, absolutely charming town in west Germany... and one of the most important and major Roman cities north of the Alps... the amphitheater has a great above view and interesting underground too... it is well preserved, especially the rooms under the arena, where they kept animals and gladiators... originally it had a capacity of over 20,000 spectators... the arena hosted a variety of events including gladiator battles, animal hunts, music concerts, entertainment shows as well as religious festivals...  with as always a nice stamp and special first day postmark... Thanks a lot Dustin!【ツ】

The structure which was dug into the side of a hill was erected around the 2nd century A.D during the rule of Antoninus Pius. Measuring 120 by 145 meters makes it  the 10th largest Roman amphitheatre still intact. It was built into what was at the time the city's wall, to the east of the modern and Roman city centre. When Constantius Chlorus moved to Trier, around 293 during the Tetrarchy he renovated the amphitheater.

The Roman amphitheater in Trier has been part of the Trier UNESCO World Heritage since 1986.
