GERMANY ~ St. Andreas Church - Hildesheim ~

... Great view of an enormous, three-nave, Gothic church that dominates the city and visible from afar... this Medieval Church is a prominent landmark and a popular religious site... the church's structure is dominated by a 114m high tower, the tallest spire of Lower Saxony... interestingly,  the spire was completed only in 1883, 500 years after construction began in 1389... after climbing a reconstructed stone spiral staircase of 364 steps breath-taking views of the city and nearby countryside can be enjoyed from the tower... a truly amazing experience... with nice stamp and special Christmas postmarks... Germany’s very first children's Christmas post office was opened in Himmelsthür in 1967 a district in the town of Hildesheim... Thanks a lot Dustin!¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Gospel Lutheran Church of St. Andrei leads its beginning from the chapel of the Apostle Andrei in 1022.

The building of the gothic church, in the basilica style and romanesque westwork, was begun at the end of the 14thC. The Church itself was built over 100 years.

The church burned down during the Second World War in March 1945, and only the ruined outer wall remained standing. The church had already been damaged in February and March 1945.

From 1956-1965, St. Andreas was completely rebuilt as an almost exact copy of the original.
