Trier was home to three Roman baths. These Imperial Roman Baths were constructed during Constantine the Great reign in the 4thC, but never finished. The original bathing structures were over 200 meters long and 100 meters wide and could serve several thousand visitors at the same time. During the Middle Ages, the baths were turned into a castle. They have also been used as a city wall and a monastery.
It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site. But only two of the baths are on the UNESCO list. The baths at the Viehmarkt were not inscribed because they were just rediscovered a year after the inscription.
