GERMANY ~ Imperial Baths - Trier - UNESCO ~

... Back to Trier🙂 with a great view of some of the largest and best preserved Ancient Roman public baths outside of Rome... the remains of the monumental Imperial Baths are centrally located within the city and are a fantastic site, with many of its walls still standing... known in German as "Kaiserthermen", the baths were built around hot water pools reaching 40°C... underneath the complex was a network of underground passageways used by the staff which can still be seen today, along with the remains of the sewer system... Thanks Dustin!【ツ】

Trier was home to three Roman baths. These Imperial Roman Baths were constructed during Constantine the Great reign in the 4thC, but never finished. The original bathing structures were over 200 meters long and 100 meters wide and could serve several thousand visitors at the same time. During the Middle Ages, the baths were turned into a castle. They have also been used as a city wall and a monastery.

It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site. But only two of the baths are on the UNESCO list. The baths at the Viehmarkt were not inscribed because they were just rediscovered a year after the inscription.
