PHILLIPINES ~ Vigan - UNESCO ~

... Great view of the magnificent historical town of Vigan... the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia... it is unique among the Philippine towns because it is the country’s most extensive and only surviving historic city that dates back to the 16thC Spanish colonial period... most known for "Calle Crisologo", a well-preserved cobblestoned street that’s lined with ancestral houses... most of the old houses in the place are still used by the descendants of the original owners while others were converted into museums and galleries... its historical and cultural significance makes it a popular destination among millions of local and international travelers... Thanks a lot John!【ツ】

Located on the western coast of Luzon, the city of Vigan is the capital of the province of Ilocos Sur. Vigan is an island that was originally disconnected from the mainland by three rivers – the great Abra River, the Mestizo River, and the Govantes River.

It was founded as a trading town in 1572 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo. He named the city "Vigan" after the plant. As the city grew, and the seat of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia transferred to the place, it received the name Ciudad Fernandina de Vigan, in honor of King Philip II of Spain first born son of who had died in childhood.

Vigan became a UNESCO WHS site in 1999.
