"Judith with the Head of Holofernes"
Peter Paul Rubens (around 1616)
Place of origin: Antwerp
The painting shows the biblical heroine Judith, who saved her people through her courageous actions (according to the account in the apocryphal Book of Judith).
Rubens portrayed her as a sensual, bare-breasted young woman in the company of her aged servant. Judith looks at the viewer while holding the sword with her outstretched right arm, with which she has just cut off the head of the enemy general Holofernes.
