First mentioned in a historical document in the 11thC, the castle passed into the hands of the Habsburg Dynasty in 1363. Archduke Ferdinand II had the medieval Ambras castle converted into the present Renaissance castle to display his collections of world-wide fame.
It is composed of the so-called Upper Castle, which was used as a residence, by the Lower Castle, intended to house the Archduke's Armory and the Chamber of Art and Wonders, from the Spanish room and other administrative buildings.
