AUSTRIA ~ Ambras Castle - Innsbruck - Tyrol ~

... First of 4 great vacation postcards sent by postcard friend Dustin💙... this beautifully preserved romantic Renaissance-style castle is built on a hill above the valley overlooking the city... the place has also a well manicured picturesque English landscape garden... Schloss Ambras is the oldest museum complex in the world... it's the perfect place to explore 16thC imperial happenings and historic collections of art, armor and books... Ambras Castle Innsbruck is the only federal museum in Austria located outside Vienna... it's one of the major tourist attractions in the whole of Tyrol... Thanks a lot Dustin!【ツ】

First mentioned in a historical document in the 11thC, the castle passed into the hands of the Habsburg Dynasty in 1363. Archduke Ferdinand II had the medieval Ambras castle converted into the present Renaissance castle to display his collections of world-wide fame.

It is composed of the so-called Upper Castle, which was used as a residence, by the Lower Castle, intended to house the Archduke's Armory and the Chamber of Art and Wonders, from the Spanish room  and other administrative buildings.
