AUSTRIA ~ Grossglockner - High Tauern National Park ~

... Impressive view of Austria's highest mountain and centerpiece of the High Tauern National Park... the massive and mighty pyramid-shaped "black mountain"... the greenstone core is surrounded by a mantle of schistous rock that gives the Glockner its black colour... the Grossglockner towers above the 8 km Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps... it is well-known even to non-alpinists as a must-see destination, with long glaciers and other high-elevation attractions... the Grossglockner High Alpine Road,  the highest surfaced mountain pass road in the country, is named after this monumental mountain and contributes to its access and fame... unfortunately, due to global warming, the glaciers has have lost an average of 15 meters in length in just one year😔... Thanks a lot Dustin! (✿◠‿◠)

The Grossglockner at a hight of 3798m lies on the border between Carinthia and Tyrol. The peak is part of the Glocknerkamm ridge in the Glockner Group.(range of the Eastern Alps)

The High Tauern National Park founded in 1981 and has an area of 1,856km², Austria’s largest national park, stretches over three provinces.. The park is home to more than 300 mountain peaks over 3,000m above sealevel, 332 glaciers with a total area of 126 km², 551 mountain lakes, 279 streams/rivers, including 57 glacial streams and 26 significant waterfalls (numerous small waterfalls).  About 35% of the national park's area is pasture land or cultivated landscape.

The forests, slopes, meadows and rocky regions of the Grossglockner offer a unique habitat for many animals and plants in various climes. Ibexes, chamois and marmots can be seen in great numbers. Vultures and golden eagles circle high above the summits and dips.
