Stendal is the largest town in the Altmark located in the north of Saxony-Anhalt and is one of the oldest towns in the old Mark Brandenburg.
Stendal was first mentioned in 1022, and in 1165 it received city rights. In addition to the core town, another 18 villages with a total of 30 districts belong to the "heart of the Altmark".
